Our Caregiver Learning Through Play 2.0 team recently spent two meaningful days in the Free State — reflecting, connecting and, most importantly, playing!

On 3 September, our Free State provincial office held their quarterly Caregiver Learning Through Play (CLTP) 2.0 review meeting, reflecting on the programme’s progress, impact and areas for growth. 4 September was the much anticipated Play Date!

Children, practitioners and community partners came together for a day of learning and play. From Childline’s engaging puppet show to important conversations with social workers and SAPS about child safety, the day was a beautiful reminder of the power of play. Even the wind couldn’t stop the fun!

As Thobekile, CLTP Provincial Manager for the Free State, reminded us: “Remember when we were young? We never checked the weather forecast to play.” 😄

These two days reminded us that CLTP is about more than a programme — it’s about creating safe spaces where children can learn, play and thrive. 💚

📚 𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗. 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗥.

This International Literacy Day, HOPE worldwide South Africa is celebrating the power of books by putting 2 books into the hands of every child at five ECD centres in Braamfischer, Soweto.

That means 209 children each received two books — giving them stories to take home, share and learn from.

But the impact doesn’t stop with the children. We also provided additional books to ECD practitioners to add to their classroom reading corners, helping create spaces where children can explore books and develop a love for reading every day.

Because supporting literacy isn't about a once-off donation. It’s about creating environments where books are accessible, reading is encouraged, and educators have the resources to make stories part of everyday learning.

This is part of a much bigger commitment. This year alone, HOPE worldwide South Africa has distributed more than 70,000 books across its network — reinforcing our commitment to building stronger foundations for literacy from the earliest years. Through initiatives such as the Book & Breakfast Initiative and Caregiver Learning Through Play (CLTP) 2.0, we continue to place books, shared reading and early literacy at the heart of our ECD work.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗖𝗗 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗽𝗼.

HOPE worldwide South Africa (HOPEww SA) was proud to join the first-ever Limpopo Provincial Early Childhood Development (ECD) Multi-Stakeholder Summit and Indaba, hosted by the Limpopo Department of Education in collaboration with Save the Children SA and SmartStart on 1–2 September 2026 at The Ranch Hotel in Polokwane.

Bringing together government, ECD practitioners, civil society, traditional leaders and other stakeholders, the Indaba highlighted a powerful truth: stronger ECD outcomes require stronger collaboration.

As part of the two-day gathering, our HOPEww SA representative contributed by showcasing our programmes and resources through an interactive activation.

We were also proud to distribute 270 gifts to ECD centres, supporting the dedicated practitioners working every day to give young children the best possible start.

For HOPEww SA, partnership is at the heart of how we work. When we connect people, programmes and resources, we can build stronger systems—and better futures for children.

𝗔 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗹. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲.

For children to learn, play and thrive, they need the energy and the right nutrition to fuel their growing bodies and developing minds.

At Disney Academy, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre in Soshanguve, breakfast is helping make that possible.

For the past three years, Disney Academy has been part of HOPE worldwide South Africa’s nutrition support programme through Feed the Future SA.

Florence Tshoana from Disney Academy has seen the difference:

“Kids are gaining weight as they’ve been eating it every week. They’ve become stronger with more energy.”

Each month, practitioners monitor the children’s growth and nutritional status, helping them track changes and see the impact over time.

There’s another important benefit. Because the breakfasts are quick and easy to prepare, practitioners spend less time preparing food and more time doing what matters most—supporting children’s learning and development.

More energy. More strength. More opportunity to learn, play and grow.

Through Feed the Future SA, HOPE worldwide South Africa is helping make nutritious breakfasts part of the daily routine for many children, with support from the Dis-Chem Foundation, PepsiCo and FUTURELIFE, Nivea and Octodec.

Because sometimes, a breakfast is more than food. It’s a foundation for a child’s future.

𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁.

This week, we welcomed 100 interns from across South Africa to the HOPE worldwide SA family through the SERITI National Youth Service Programme.

The programme, a government initiative led by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and implemented by the Seriti Institute, creates opportunities for young South Africans to gain paid community service experience, develop practical skills and take important steps towards employment.

Their journey with us began with an opportunity to connect, learn and understand the work they will be part of. But this is about much more than welcoming 100 new interns.

It is about creating pathways to learning, skills development and employment for young people—while expanding our capacity to reach and serve more children, families and communities.

By investing in young people, we are investing in both their future and the future of the communities we serve. More people with skills and experience means greater capacity, greater reach and ultimately greater impact.

We are grateful to Seriti Institute for their ongoing partnership and for helping create opportunities that enable young South Africans to learn, contribute and gain valuable workplace experience.

We look forward to seeing these 100 young people grow, learn and make their contribution to a greater impact across South Africa.

💬 When children talk, they’re making connections.

A child talking about Power Rangers and rangers in a jungle might sound like simple imagination, but there’s so much more happening beneath the surface. 🌱

Through conversation, children connect what they already know with new ideas, build vocabulary, express their thoughts and strengthen their ability to make associations between different experiences.

When caregivers take the time to listen, ask questions and engage with what children are interested in, everyday conversations become powerful learning opportunities. ❤️

Because sometimes, a conversation about Power Rangers is also a conversation about language, imagination, memory and learning.
