This Youth Day and Day of the African Child, we're taking a trip down memory lane.

The little faces in these photos belong to the passionate people who make up HOPE worldwide SA today. Once children with big dreams and endless potential, they are now working to help create brighter futures for the next generation.

As we celebrate Youth Day and the Day of the African Child, we're reminded that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, play, grow, and thrive.

Because every adult was once a childโ€”and every child holds the promise of tomorrow.

On International Day of Play, HOPE worldwide SA together with UNICEF, the Department of Basic Education, Cotlands, and Sesame Workshop visited two Early Childhood Development centres to celebrate and champion the power of play.

Through laughter, learning, and meaningful engagement, we highlighted how play helps children build confidence, creativity, resilience, and essential life skills. As we mark this year's theme, "Protect play, protect childhood," we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive through play.

Because when we protect play, we protect the foundation of a brighter future. ๐Ÿ’™

HOPE worldwide South Africa, in partnership with Exxaro through the Bana Batla Pele Programme, recently celebrated the launch of two upgraded ECD centres: Siyakhula ECD Preschool in Kriel and Sanet Se Speelgroepie in Belfast.

These revitalised centres now provide safe, child-friendly spaces with dedicated classrooms, kitchens, offices, and sanitation facilities, helping create environments where young children can learn, play, and thrive.

The launch events brought together community members, government representatives, parents, practitioners, and partners to celebrate the power of investing in young children. As Exxaro's Tumi Motlana shared, "Our focus is not simply on building ECD centres; it is on building children."

The programme also reinforces our commitment to the Department of Basic Education's Bana Pele programme by supporting ECD centres on their compliance and registration journey. By helping centres meet required standards, we are contributing to improved quality in early learning while unlocking opportunities for government subsidies that can strengthen and sustain these centres for years to come.

Together, we are strengthening access to quality early learning and ensuring more children receive the best possible start in life.

Hunger steals more than food โ€” it steals energy, concentration, confidence, and moments of childhood.

This World Hunger Day, HOPE worldwide SA continues working to ensure children receive nutritious meals and the support they need to learn, play, and thrive. Through programmes like KFC , Feed the Future SA funded by Dis-Chem Foundation, PepsiCo , FUTURELIFE, Nivea, and Octodec as well as the Book & Breakfast Initiative, every meal served becomes a reminder that care can change a childโ€™s day.

Join us as we continue fighting child hunger โ€” one meal at a time.

At HOPE worldwide South Africa, we continue to witness the incredible impact that quality nutrition has on early childhood development through the Unity Meals programme. During a recent visit to Angel Academy, a preschool caring for approximately 120 children, we saw firsthand how dedication, compassion, and community support can create an environment where children are able to thrive. The centre is well known in its community for the quality of education it provides and for the genuine care and commitment shown by its teachers every day.

Despite serving many families who are unable to consistently afford school fees, Angel Academy stands as a testament to parents who remain determined to secure the best possible future for their children. Even in difficult circumstances, families continue to seek opportunities that give their children access to safe, nurturing, and enriching learning spaces.

Grade R teacher Portia shared, โ€œI enjoy teaching at Angel Academy because it gives hope to so many people in the community. Since teaching here, I have seen a tremendous difference in the children. There are two children at the school who previously did not seem to be getting enough nutrition, but now there has been a noticeable improvement in both their food intake and their mental ability.

โ€œOur school is esteemed because we teach our children through learning by play, and we often hear testimonies from parents about children who graduate from Angel Academy and go on to do well when they reach primary school.โ€

This is why HOPE worldwide South Africa, together with valued partners including the Dis-Chem Foundation, PepsiCo Foundation and its brand FUTURELIFE, NIVEA, and Octodec, remains committed to supporting selfless Early Childhood Development centres with nutritious meals. Through the Unity Meals programme, we help ensure that children arrive in classrooms nourished, focused, and ready to learn โ€” empowering teachers to continue shaping brighter futures for every child in their care.

Last week, stakeholders from across Alexandra gathered at Clinic Inkamvalethu for a stakeholder engagement focused on strengthening support for young children, caregivers, and families through the (CLTP) 2.0 programme.

The engagement brought together ECD practitioners, government departments, SAPS, SASSA, and community organisations to discuss child protection, community safety, access to support services, and opportunities for stronger collaboration in supporting children and families.

Reflecting on the engagement, CLTP 2.0 Project Manager Thembi Mahlangu shared:
โ€œA key takeaway from the meeting was Hope Worldwide South Africaโ€™s intention to integrate into existing community structures to foster collaboration and resource sharing. The high turnout reflects that HOPE worldwide SA is recognized as an important partner within the Alexandra community.โ€

The engagement concluded with discussions on future collaboration and strengthening partnerships to better support children and families in Alexandra.

This past weekend, HOPE worldwide South Africa, together with monthly supporters and volunteers, spent time with the parents and caregivers of 50 children participating in the Book & Breakfast Initiative (BBI) in Diepsloot and Video โ€” two underserved communities where the programme is currently active.

BBI is an early childhood development programme that combines access to age-appropriate books with nutritious breakfasts, aimed at improving early literacy and learning readiness

The visit created a meaningful opportunity for families and supporters to connect and engage directly, strengthening relationships and deepening understanding of the programmeโ€™s impact.

In addition, clothing donations generously provided by monthly supporters and volunteers were distributed to both children and parents, offering practical relief and support to households. The gathering highlighted the value of collaboration in supporting children holistically and strengthening communities.
