Champs for Change Champs for Change is a social enterprise that empowers African youth to pursue careers in sports.

On May 29 in Kigali, alongside the BAL Finals, we brought together sports executives, athletes, investors, media professionals, and young people from across Africa for our annual convening, Behind the Game: Kigali 2026.

From conversations on leadership and investment to discussions on youth pathways into the industry, the event reinforced our belief that a thriving African sports ecosystem will be shaped not only by athletes, but also by the institutions, systems, and people working behind the scenes, beyond the field of play.

Yacine Diop Djibo has dedicated her career to using sports as a force for health equity, gender equality, and community leadership across Africa.

As the Founder & Executive Director of Speak Up Africa, she’s spent years bringing governments, athletes, and communities together to tackle major public health challenges, showing how powerful sports can be in driving awareness and real change.

In the C4C and We Will Lead Africa Sports Volume, Yacine shares how sports have helped mobilize thousands in the fight against malaria, elevated women in basketball, and created new spaces for youth leadership. Her story is a reminder that sports can offer visibility, voice, and agency, especially for women and young people.

A huge congratulations to our co-founder Clarisse Machanguana on her induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame - Class of 2026! 🏀

From Mozambique to the world stage - NCAA Finals, the WNBA, and professional leagues across multiple continents - Clarisse built a legendary basketball career and helped write history for African women’s basketball.

But her legacy goes far beyond the court. Through the Clarisse Machanguana Foundation, she has spent the last 10 years using sports to create opportunity for young people, especially girls, reaching over 25 000 youth and now building a permanent academy that blends sports, education, and digital skills. This honor celebrates excellence on the court and purpose beyond it.

At Champs for Change, Clarisse continues that mission by helping young people across Africa see, access, and build careers in sports beyond being athletes.
