Making progress in the fight against HIV starts with meeting people where they are.

That’s the idea behind Coach Mpilo, a program that has connected men in South Africa with coaches who understand the fear and stigma that can follow a diagnosis. In the seven-month trial, more than 41,000 men were supported, and 97% received and stayed on treatment.

Swipe to learn how community-led support is helping more men take charge of their health.

For more than 25 years, South African partners Population Services International and Matchboxology, supported by the Gates Foundation, have worked together to expand access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care.

Across South Africa, community-led programs like Coach Mpilo are helping drive that progress forward by connecting men living well with HIV with other men who are newly diagnosed or returning to care. Through support rooted in shared experience, coaches are helping more men stay on treatment and take charge of their health.

We are deeply concerned by the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda. Our hearts are with families who’ve lost loved ones, and with the frontline health workers, responders and volunteers working under extraordinary pressure to protect lives.

No single country can contain an outbreak alone. That’s why the governments of DRC and Uganda, Africa CDC, World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are leading a unified response. To support their efforts, the Gates Foundation is committing $15M in emergency funding to strengthen rapid containment, cross-border coordination and critical frontline operations.

The Gates Foundation is committing an initial $15 million in emergency funding due to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak affecting communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

How it started: A little girl named Omphile with a big dream for her future. ❤️

How it’s going: Omphile is on track to making those dreams come true!

Enviro Loo has installed a low-cost dry toilet that relies on wind and ambient temperature to evaporate and dehydrate the solids so learners like Omphile have the support they need to show up to class confidently, stay focused, and keep reaching for the amazing future they imagine for themselves.

We're so proud to be a part of her journey!

“Now you can have your toilets right next to the classroom.”

At Tsholetsega Public School in Johannesburg, the impact of improved sanitation is being felt by learners, teachers, and the people working to take this solution further.

Tyler Magor, Chief Operating Officer of and Nozi Rajuile, School Principal of Tsholetsega Public School show how one school’s progress can become a model for wider change, across South Africa and beyond.

Because the best innovations do more than solve a problem. They create conditions where children can participate fully, learn with confidence, and imagine more for themselves.

“I see a brighter future for our kids because they want to participate in everything that is happening here at school.”

In , Omphile Tsoeli’s school days now feel much better because sanitation brings dignity.

She feels more motivated, more confident, and freer to focus on the future she is still dreaming about.

Omphile and her school principal both agree that something as basic as a safe toilet can unlock confidence, dignity, and a child’s full potential.

Omphile’s then-and-now story: why she is feeling “really good.”

3 years ago, Omphile Tsoeli, like many learners at Tsholetsega Public School in Johannesburg, , often struggled to stay in school. Aging latrine toilets would leak human waste from a sewer pipe into the schoolyard, making something as basic as going to school feel unsafe and undignified.

Today, at 12, Omphile walks into school feeling “really good and motivated.”

This we celebrate partners like Enviro Loo, for their innovative sanitation systems that are helping keep learners in school, reducing absenteeism by up to 80%.

We caught up with Omphile. See how she’s doing now.

Today at the Africa CEO Forum, we are joining leaders across government, business, and philanthropy for a "$7 question" side event to explore how we can work more effectively together to improve maternal and child survival across Africa.

We will focus on practical questions that help shape shared solutions on:
How can we move from parallel efforts to shared national delivery systems?

Where can business capabilities, from capital and supply chains to data, logistics, technology, and financing platforms, complement government priorities and help accelerate progress?

What governance, risk-sharing, and partnership models can give leaders the confidence to invest in solutions that deliver measurable impact?

This is an opportunity to reflect, align, and identify tangible commitments that can strengthen health systems, support mothers and children, and contribute to long-term economic resilience.
It is a $7 conversation.
