Lubanzi holds a photo of his grandparents, the people who raised him from the time he was a baby.

Since their passing, he has been living with relatives who have opened their home and hearts to him. Through Starfish, children like Lubanzi are supported not only in the classroom, but in the daily care that helps them feel safe, nourished, and seen.

At his Starfish-supported school, Lubanzi receives warm meals, caring teachers, familiar routines, and a safe place to learn and grow. Starfish also helps support caregivers, so families have the encouragement and stability they need as they care for children who have already experienced so much loss.

Lubanzi’s story holds grief, but it also holds love, community, and the gentle promise of a brighter future.

When little Sizwe arrived at the rural health checkpoint, she held tightly to her grandmother’s hand.

Her grandmother was worried about her cough, and transport to a clinic was not always possible. Under the white tent, a friendly nurse checked Sizwe and made sure she received the care she needed.

For her grandmother, it meant relief. For Sizwe, it meant someone was looking out for her.

Because of our generous donors, children like Sizwe are reached with care, dignity, and support right where they are.

📖Education prepares a child to learn.
🍊Nutrition fuels their growth.
🩺 Health care protects their development.

But none of these pillars can stand without stability at home.

Part 4 of our four-part blog series explores why social welfare is essential to early childhood development in South Africa. When families are supported, children experience safety, consistency, and the foundation they need to thrive.

Strengthening families strengthens futures.

When little Dipho first arrived at preschool, she was shy and unsure. She stayed close to the wall, watching the other children play.

But with a caring teacher beside her, Dipho slowly began to join in. She picked up a crayon, shared it with a friend, and proudly showed the picture she had made.

For Dipho, preschool became more than a classroom. It became a place where she felt safe, confident, and ready to learn.

In South Africa, only 42% of children in early learning programs are developmentally on track by age four.

Because of generous donors, children like Dipho can learn, grow, and take their first steps toward a brighter future. 💛

Community gardens grow more than food. 🌱

For many children and families, fresh vegetables can be hard to come by. But through community gardens, nutritious food can grow close to home. Helping fill plates, support healthier children, and strengthen families.

These gardens also teach important skills that help communities become more self-sustaining over time.

Because of generous donors, seeds can become meals, gardens can become learning spaces, and children can grow up with the nourishment they need to thrive.

💛 Thank you for helping communities grow stronger from the ground up.

A child’s earliest years shape so much of what comes next.

At this age, every meal, every story, every caring teacher, and every safe day in the classroom helps build the foundation for learning, confidence, and healthy development.

For many children, that strong start is not guaranteed.

But because of generous donors, young children can receive the early education, nutrition, healthcare, and care they need during the most important years of development.

💛 Your kindness helps a child grow, learn, and step into the future with a stronger foundation.

When Ayanda lost her mother, she became the primary caregiver for her younger siblings while still a child herself.

Through Starfish’s social welfare support, her family was connected to vital social grants, helping provide food, school essentials, and greater stability during an incredibly difficult time.

Your support helps protect vulnerable children, strengthen families, and ensure no child carries life’s heaviest burdens alone.

The recent devastating storms in the Cape this week have left two of our schools flooded and damaged.

Our communities are hurting and need your help right away!

For some children, these schools provide the only reliable meal they receive each day. Without schools, the children in these hard-hit communities will go hungry until they reopen!
