Cape Town winters can be cold, grey, and wet. But when the clouds clear and the winter sun comes out, the playground comes alive. ☀️

For a child like Ayanda, school may be the only place where she can safely run, explore, and play outside. At home, there may be no garden or protected play area, while stray dogs, rubbish, and busy streets can make outdoor play unsafe.

So a clear blue sky, a warm jacket, and a bright red bucket in the sandpit mean more than fun. They mean freedom to play, learn, laugh, and simply be a child.

During a recent visit to one of the schools we support in the Western Cape, Absalom, our Projects Manager, took this photograph at lunchtime.

For many of the children sitting down to eat, this may be the only full meal they receive that day. At home, families are stretching every rand they have, and there is not always enough food to go around.

But at school, a warm meal awaits them, along with snacks throughout the day. Because of your generosity, a child can sit down, eat until they are full, and return to the classroom with the energy to learn, play, and concentrate.

Every morning, six-year-old Lethabo slips his small hand into his father’s as they walk to school, carefully making their way along dusty roads past barking dogs, piles of rubbish, cow dung, and goat droppings.

Since Lethabo’s mother died, his father has been raising him alone in a dilapidated one-room shack. He does everything he can to give his little boy the love, routine, and security he needs, but he does not have to carry that responsibility entirely on his own.

Through Starfish’s social welfare programme, a community caregiver regularly checks in with the family, helps Lethabo stay connected to school, and makes sure his father has someone to turn to when challenges arise.

Sometimes support looks like something very simple: a caring person showing up, listening, and making sure a father and his child know they are not alone.

Under the warm winter sun in the Eastern Cape, Sibusiso grips the handlebars of his little orange bike and pushes himself across the grass with a determined smile.

His teacher watches nearby as other children wait for their turn, climb on painted tyres, and call out to friends.

It may look like simple play, but Sibusiso is building balance, coordination, and confidence. The children waiting behind him are learning patience, cooperation, and how to be part of a group.

At a Starfish-supported preschool, outdoor play gives young children a safe place to move, explore, learn, and simply enjoy being children.

Adam leaned in and smelled the fresh oranges tucked into his food parcel. A small moment, but one that says so much.

When school closes for break, many children lose access to the meals they count on each day. For families already stretched thin, that can mean even more worry at home.

Because of generous donors, Adam received nutritious food to help carry him through the weekend and school break. In that parcel were more than groceries. There was relief, dignity, and the simple comfort of knowing there would be something to eat.

For nearly 1 in 8 South African children, hunger is part of daily life, and school breaks can mean losing the dependable meals they receive at school.
