When 74-year-old Doddy was trapped inside the burning Delfi Greek Taverna, Ayakha Godlwana kept going back into the smoke until he found her and brought her out alive.

He asked for nothing.

But Durban went looking for him.

Dolly Parton was one of those rare people who somehow felt like she belonged to all of us.

We all grew up with her. Her music filled our homes, her songs became part of our memories, and she was always a familiar face on our TV screens. Somehow, even from a world away, she made us feel connected to her. Seen by her.

She was an incredibly powerful woman, but she carried that power with warmth, humour and an enormous capacity for kindness.

And her legacy was never only in the music.

Through her Imagination Library, she put books into the hands of millions of children. She supported education, medical research and children’s healthcare, and helped families rebuild after disaster. Again and again, she used what she had to lift others.

Perhaps there’s something we can all learn from the way Dolly lived: whatever you have, use some of it to make somebody else’s life a little better.

Her generosity will keep rippling through generations, and through her music, she will live forever.

Today, the world feels a little out of place.

An urgent update for Candice Ferreira. 💙

Candice Ferreira (41), from East London, is a devoted mother of three who has endured severe pain every day for the past two years due to multiple large gallstones.

Her condition has now worsened. Candice has been admitted to a government hospital after spending the night in casualty, but her family is desperately trying to raise enough funds to transfer her to a private hospital where she can receive the urgent, lifesaving treatment she needs.

Her condition is affecting her liver, and doctors have recommended emergency keyhole surgery to remove her gallbladder before her health deteriorates further.

The cost of private treatment is R90,000—covering the surgeon, theatre fees, and hospital stay—an amount far beyond what Candice and her family can afford.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help bring her closer to the care she urgently needs. If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing her story could help it reach someone who can.

Please help Candice get through this difficult time and back to what matters most—being there for her three children.

🏉 Let’s Help Jordan Get Over the Try Line!

Jordan Hodge (13), from West Beach, Blouberg, has been playing rugby since he was 5 years old — and his love for the game keeps growing stronger every season.

In 2024, he packed down in the front row as the B team’s ho**er, wearing the number 2 jersey and building a strong foundation in the game.

In 2025, Jordan stepped up in a big way. He was selected as the number 16 ho**er for the A team squad, ready to make an impact when called upon, while also continuing to anchor the B team at ho**er. He was named B team captain and went on to receive B Team Player of the Year honours — a testament to his hard work and commitment.

Now, as he begins his journey at Milnerton High School, Jordan has been selected to represent the U14A Rugby touring squad in Durban from 27 March to 2 April 2026.

It’s a fantastic chance to bond with his new teammates, grow his skills, and represent his school with pride.

The total tour cost is R12,000, covering his kit, accommodation, food, and tour expenses. An incredible R6,000 has already been raised — he’s halfway there!

This week, we spotlight Judy Knox, John Ancill, Monique, and GDad from Marlands, Germiston — who have quietly built one of the East Rand’s most heartfelt rescue efforts, all through the simple act of recycling.

Their journey began with Paul, a tiny puppy found limp and freezing on their doorstep. He survived against all odds, and his fight for life became the heartbeat of what is now Recycling for Animal Welfare.

Eight years later, Judy and John have recycled more than 750 tons of glass and 75 tons of cardboard, using every cent to pay for veterinary care for abandoned, injured, and vulnerable animals across Johannesburg.

Their bond with these animals — and their unwavering commitment — continues even as the need around them grows.
