UPDATE | Joburg’s billion-rand Eskom bill payment due as public participation deadline extended
• Eskom has extended its public participation deadline as Johannesburg fails to pay its debt.
• No agreement has yet been reached between Eskom and the city, prompting civic groups and the DA to launch petitions demanding that Eskom spare residents from paying for the city’s failures.
• The public consultations were set to conclude on Wednesday but were extended at the eleventh hour.
After several requests, Eskom has agreed to give the public an extra 30 days to weigh in on whether it should be allowed to cut off the City of Johannesburg’s electricity bill.
In a statement on Wednesday evening, the power utility said, given that Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s intervention occurred within the first week of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) process, “the closing date for public representations, submissions, comments and/or requests will now be the close of business on 17 July”.
“Eskom will consider all submissions received and communicate the outcome of the process on 24 July,” it stated, adding that when the PAJA was issued, the city owed Eskom R5 255 421 994.16, excluding the current account of R1 582 093 993.32. This was due on 5 June.
The statement said the city had continued to make payments towards the electricity account and had paid R1.2 billion when the PAJA was issued.
