Hi everyone,

The Cleaner Campaign with Norwood Grime Fighters and Spiritual Chords is going strong!

We’ve successfully secured a cleaner for both the Dorothy to Frances block and the Nando’s block, which has never looked this clean in a long time.We still need to chat with a few businesses in the Nando’s block, and we hope to get them on board soon.

Now, we’re working with stores from Frances to Nellie to achieve the same.We have received commitments from a few stores and will update accordingly.

We’ve also received generous contributions from individuals in the community, and we sincerely thank them for their support.

We understand that some stores may have financial constraints, and participation is entirely voluntary with no obligation.

Grant is improving every day, but we can’t afford to be complacent. Keeping our streets clean requires ongoing effort, and every contribution—big or small—makes a difference.

A lot of appreciation to Grime Fighters for driving the community support and clean up initiative on Grant Avenue so that we were able to pay a designated cleaner for this, as well as to the contributing store owners who are visionary enough to do the right thing for this community, even though all stores are not contributing but still benefitting. We pray that non participating store owners comminuty members also come to the party.

Appreciation to NBA for adopting Norwood Park and sponsoring the salary of the person we trained to clean the park.

*HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?*

1 .*Norwood Grime Fighters*
1. Get involved in the committee. This requires active involvement including assisting with future walkthroughs; engaging our contacts at the municipal agencies as well as establishing new ones; etc.
2. Assist with the Grime Fighters Street Cleaner initiative by contacting residents and businesses [preferably in person if you don't know them or via phone/message if you do] to ask them to contribute R300pm (or what they can afford) to this non profit community initiative;
3. General lobbying of businesses and landlords to get involved in the upliftment of Grant Avenue and Norwood as a whole, which involves keeping the area outside their businesses clean, educating their employees about this and responsible waste management practices;
4. Advocating for and positively engaging with the Grime Fighter initiatives on public platforms including the WhatsApp groups and social media;
5. Assisting with social media to help spread the Grime Fighters message of cleaning up Norwood.

This is what Grant Avenue used to look like on a daily basis. A few dedicated individuals, investing time and effort, have made a noticeable difference.

Now, imagine what more could be achieved if more people got involved. Together, we can create an even greater impact and truly transform our neighborhood .

Bev walks her dogs on the high street on most days and today she posted this.

"Gosh - I walked Grant Avenue early this morning and it was almost clean!
The road actually looked wider than usual and the only bits and pieces were outside Milanos and the Ritz Cafe.

The street cleaner initiative is making good progress. The first full time cleaner is working on Grant Avenue between Dorothy and Frances.

We're working on the second cleaner for William Road (Nandos block) as well as Ivy Road - across the park. This will possibly include Spar and Woolworths, as well as Grant Avenue till Andiccio and Momo&O.

If you own a business or building in Norwood, please reach out via email to [email protected] to see how you can contribute.

We ask the community to please ask the shops they frequent to:
1. Keep the sidewalk in front of their businesses clean;
2. Work with their landlord and fellow tenants to make sure there are a sufficient number of bins and these are managed properly (including wet waste for food places);
3. Contribute to the street cleaner initiative.

Hi Neighbours

I'm sure you've noticed incremental improvements on Grant Avenue since the Norwood Grime Fighters started our initiative to clean up Grant Avenue.

As many of you are probably aware, we embarked on an education and awareness walkthrough on part of Grant Avenue in November and December with government agencies like SAPS, JMPD, Pikitup, EMS and Environmental Health; as well as community organisations like the CPF, NBA, NORA, Spiritual Chords and others. This initiative will continue in 2025 with further walkthroughs planned, along with much more enforcement from SAPS and JMPD.

Beyond that, we're happy to announce that we've launched a street cleaner initiative where we are getting businesses to contribute towards full time cleaners to sweep/clean the sidewalks and streets. The first cleaner started work on Thursday 2 January 2025 and he's working on Grant Avenue between Dorothy and Frances Roads.

Norwood Grime Fighters is a community-driven initiative dedicated to keeping Grant Avenue and Norwood clean, vibrant, and safe.

In collaboration with municipal entities, we are working tirelessly to maintain cleanliness and reduce crime in our neighborhood. However, we need your support to achieve our goals:

Avoid Tipping Car Guards: Unfortunately, we’ve encountered issues with some car guards engaging in confrontational behavior, including fights and intoxication. Your cooperation in this matter helps maintain a peaceful environment.

Dispose of Rubbish Responsibly: Please help us keep our streets and pavements clean by not littering. Every small action contributes to a cleaner Norwood.

Be Mindful When Parking: Ensure intersections, corners, and other vehicles are not obstructed by double parking. Thoughtful parking keeps the area safe and accessible for everyone.

Norwood Grime Fighters Launch Awareness Initiative on Grant Avenue

Norwood, Johannesburg — 20 November 2024

In response to increasing decay in Norwood, a group of concerned residents has formed the Norwood Grime Fighters (NGF). Supported by the Norwood Business Association (NBA) and CPF Sector 3, the group has collaborated with local authorities to clean up the area. Today, they launched an education and awareness campaign on Grant Avenue.

The event, involving key stakeholders such as the NBA, Norwood CPF Sector 3, and local councillors, began with an address from Norwood SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Govender. He pledged to address illegal buildings, reckless driving, and delivery driver misconduct, warning that serious consequences await violators.

Pikitup, the city’s waste management company, provided guidance on proper waste disposal, while JMPD and SAPS stressed the need to reduce support for disruptive car guards, calling on residents to stop providing them with food and money.

The NBA’s initiatives, including assisting with criminal investigations and addressing illegal dumping, have made a significant difference. This latest campaign marks the start of a broader effort to restore Norwood’s community pride.
