The Fruit Basket

The Fruit Basket A trans led org that serves, supports and advocates for LGBTIQ+ migrants, refugees & asylum seekers.

The Fruit basket was borne out of a necessity to create a space to accommodate every member of the LGBTQQIP2SAA community. Our idea of inclusion does not solely rely on acceptance, but empowerment and effective service delivery. Through giving access to opportunities tailored specifically for our community by aligning with the right people and organizations we have created a platform that can ensure that discrimination will not hinder opportunity.

🗣️ Public Statement 🗣️

When did protecting Human Rights become negotiable?

As we reflect on IDAHOBIT and Africa Day having occurred in the month of May, the growing normalisation of Afro-phobic exclusion and hostility in South Africa is a call for great concern.

While anti-migrant unrest continues across South Africa, The Fruit Basket reaffirms its commitment to dignity, safety, and human rights for all migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. Specifically those who are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Sip and Paint @ TFB 🎨🫟🖌️

With swift brush strokes and blank canvas masks, we hosted LGBTQIA+ community members for a therapeutic painting session.

Participants took the even as an opportunity to find reprieve and solace from the violent anti-migrant and anti-q***r sentiments that have been prevalent across the country.

Through this engagement, we reaffirmed our determination to be a safe space and support for migrants, asylum seekers and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

RFSL Visits The Fruit Basket 🌍✨

On 11 May, 2026, Jonathan and Jannike from RFSL in Sweden, one of our funders, visited our offices. We reflected and exchanged information on our collaboration, on LGBTQI movement building, organisational development, accountability, and community care across the Southern African region.

Conversations highlighted the importance of safe housing, legal and psychosocial support, long-term partnerships, and strengthening underrepresented refugee, asylum seeker and migrant LGBTQI communities. 🏳️‍🌈

The message was clear: sustainable movements are built through solidarity, transparency, and collective resilience rooted in local realities. 💪🏽🌍

Today is IDAHOBIT 🏳️‍🌈🌍🏳️‍⚧️

The heart of democracy is the protection of dignity, freedom, and safety for all people regardless of borders, identities and journeys.

Yet across Africa, q***r and trans migrants and refugees continue to face violence, criminalisation, exclusion, and unsafe migration pathways while seeking protection and asylum.

Through our *Safe to Be, Safe to Move* campaign, we call attention to the systemic failures that leave LGBTQIA+ people unprotected, and advocate for a future where everyone is safe to exist, safe to move, and safe to belong.

🌈✨ SIDA visits TFB ✨🌈

On 8 May 2026, representatives from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency visited The Fruit Basket for a meaningful exchange centred on strengthening organisational development, contextualising LGBTQI+ refugee and migrant realities within the Southern African region, and reflecting on the lived journeys and leadership of those shaping TFB’s vision and impact.

This visit created space for thoughtful dialogue on community-led advocacy, regional solidarity, and the importance of building sustainable systems of care and protection for LGBTQI+ displaced communities. It was also a platform for the powerful experiences, resilience, and leadership that continue to shape TFB’s work across borders and communities.

To the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, we say thank you — for seeing us, for empowering our communities, and for continuing to prioritise human rights above all.

Safe to Be. Safe to Move 🏳️‍🌈📍🏳️‍⚧️

Across Africa, LGBTQI+ people are forced to flee persecution, yet the journey itself is often just as dangerous. We don’t just flee persecution — we travel through it.

Running until 28 July, this campaign builds toward the launch of the LGBTQI+ Refugee Regional Safe Passage Network;
a community-led, cross-border system of care.

This IDAHOBIT (Internally Day Against Homosexuality, Biphobia and Transphobia) we stand against homophobia and xenophobia. Because safety must include the ability to move.

As systems fail, we are committed to building our own. Will you be joining the movement? ✊🏾✊🏽✊🏻

FREEDOM THAT LEAVES SOME BEHIND
IS NOT FREEDOM AT ALL ‼️

This Freedom Day, we call for awareness and action because freedom is lived, not just promised. Especially for those facing discrimination based on sexuality, gender expression and/or identity, and nationality.

South Africa's recognition of Freedom includes those seeking asylum and refuge, the country's policies ought to reflect this as well. 🏳️‍🌈✊🏾🏳️‍⚧️
