Nkulo Community Partnership Trust

Nkulo Community Partnership Trust Nkulo Trust: We aim to drive growth & build self-reliant communities in Thungela’s mining host areas Our purpose is simple: to grow all that we touch.

Nkulo Community Partnership Trust (Nkulo Trust), founded in 2021, is a non-profit organisation (NPO) and public benefit organisation (PBO) dedicated to fostering socio-economic development in Thungela’s mine host communities and the labour-sending areas. The name Nkulo means “growth of the people,” and our dream is to plant the seeds of change in communities because small seeds become large, life-

changing projects. We will achieve our purpose by implementing initiatives in education and skills development, health, welfare and social orientation, and growth in alternative economies. Governed by a dedicated board of trustees, we collaborate and uplift benefiting communities, building one brick at a time to create impact and long-term change.

Not long ago, learners at Mphephethe Primary School were still using asbestos classrooms since 1992.

Now, the project is nearing the moment the school community has been waiting for.

Through a partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Education, new classrooms for Foundation to Senior phase and ablution facilities are nearing completion, and what was once a dream is almost a reality.

We look forward to the school community seeing and experiencing the completed spaces soon.

Nkulo Community Partnership Trust was created as a vehicle for doing good in the communities where Thungela operates.

It was named intentionally.

The Trust was created to work with communities and partners to support needs that matter in everyday life.

In Mpumalanga, this included hospital supplies for the Department of Health and a honeysucker truck for Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

The aim is simple: to help improve services, strengthen communities and support socio-economic change that can last beyond the life of mines.

The Bonginhlanhla Stimulation Centre is now 90% complete!

We are entering the final stretch of this incredible journey. Our focus is now on the critical details – site finishing, rigorous quality assurance, and final preparations to ensure a safe, nurturing, and fully accessible environment for differently-abled children, their families, and the dedicated staff.

The finish line is in sight, and we look forward to sharing more updates as we get closer to officially handing this facility over to the community of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

Africa is full of strength, heart and possibility.

Across the continent, people are showing up every day to support one another, grow communities and help build a better future.

This Africa Day, we celebrate the spirit of the continent and the shared effort that continues to move Africa forward.

A child's ability to learn is shaped by more than what happens in the classroom.

The environment around them, the systems that support teaching, and the structures that help schools function every day all play an important role.

That understanding sits at the heart of the Thungela Education Initiative, a five-year programme launched with the Mpumalanga Department of Education to help strengthen the learning environment in 45 no-fee schools across the Nkangala and Gert Sibande districts.

Thungela committed R160 million to the initiative over five years, with Nkulo Community Partnership Trust partnering in this work through funding of R10 million per year from 2025 to 2028.

Nkulo Trust’s involvement in this initiative comes from an understanding that education is influenced by more than what happens in the classroom. When the right support is in place around teaching, learning and the day-to-day life of a school, it creates a stronger foundation for both learners and educators.

Workers’ Day honours the people whose work keeps communities moving every single day. People show up, put in the effort, support their families, and help build stronger communities through their work.

Some of that work is visible, some of it happens quietly in the background, but all of it helps communities function and thrive.

Today, we celebrate the dedication, resilience, and contributions of every worker helping to shape a better future.

Tag who you want to celebrate today.

Freedom Day marks an important chapter in South Africa’s history and the beginning of the country’s democratic journey.

Democracy is not only reflected in the right to vote. It is also reflected in the conditions that allow communities to live with dignity and opportunity. Reliable water, safe schools, access to healthcare and strong infrastructure all play an important role in laying the foundations for greater equality in communities.

These are some of the areas the Nkulo Community Partnership Trust works to support through projects developed alongside partners and the communities we serve.

Projects like these help ensure that the benefits of democracy continue to be felt in everyday life.

As we mark Freedom Day, we recognise the importance of continuing to support initiatives that improve the lives of communities in the areas we serve.

Thank you to every organisation and applicant who took the time to prepare and submit a proposal. The level of interest has been significant, and we value the effort behind each submission.

We are currently working through the applications and completing the necessary administrative checks before the next stage of the process begins.

Once this stage is complete, applications will move into formal review and moderation. We will communicate with applicants as soon as there is a further update to share.

Thank you for your patience.

The work of the Nkulo Community Partnership Trust is focused in three local municipalities: eMalahleni, Steve Tshwete and Govan Mbeki.

These are the communities where initiatives supported by the Trust are implemented, responding to the needs of the people who live in these municipalities.

Projects in these areas aim to improve the spaces people rely on every day, from schools and healthcare facilities to essential infrastructure.

By focusing its work here, the Trust continues to help improve local facilities and services over time.

Are you from the municipalities we serve, or do you have projects that support them too? Let us know in the comments.
