Northlands Ferals Caring for feral cats in the Northriding area through feeding schemes and TNR WHAT DO WE DO? HOW IT WORKS? WHAT WE NEED?

We have a number of permanent feral colonies that we care for in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. We also educate businesses and private individuals in how to identify, feed and sterilise feral cats they may come across. We are supported by a number of private vets and are often assisted by Animal Allies. During TNR (trap, neuter, release) feral cats are humanely trapped and then spayed or ne

utered, vaccinated and treated for external and internal parasites after which they are returned to the location where they were collected. During the sterilization one of their ear tips are also clipped for easy identification as a sterilized cat. Feeding programs are set up and maintained by volunteers and cats are allowed to live out the rest of their natural lives with less risk of the population exploding and becoming a problem for the community. Volunteers monitoring the cats are also able to see when cats become ill and can then trap them and take them to the vet for the appropriate treatment. For these projects to be successful, we need volunteers to help feed cats, donations of wet cat food (pouches or tins) for trapping, dry cat food for continuous feeding, old towels, linen and blankets to cover traps with, and most importantantly funds for the sterilization. A donation of R350 will cover the sterilization, vaccination, deworming and defleaing of one cat. Any donations of food greatly assist our volunteers and we can arrange delivery points around Joburg. HAPPY HUMP DAY FROM NAARTJIE AND ARIEL (two of our Ginger Girl Trio).

Did you know that ginger cats are almost always male? Only about 20 % of ginger cats are female.

This is because the orange colour gene is carried in the X chromosome. Male cats need only one copy of this gene to be orange, while female cats must inherit two copies.

How the Ginger Gene Works:

Male Cats (XY): Males have just one X chromosome. If that single X chromosome carries the orange gene, the cat will be ginger.

Female Cats (XX): Females have two X chromosomes. To have a completely orange coat, both of her X chromosomes must carry the orange gene.

Mixed Coats: If a female gets the orange gene on only one of her X chromosomes, she becomes a tortoiseshell or calico cat instead of being fully ginger.
