Northlands Ferals Caring for feral cats in the Northriding area through feeding schemes and TNR WHAT DO WE DO? HOW IT WORKS? WHAT WE NEED?

We have a number of permanent feral colonies that we care for in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. We also educate businesses and private individuals in how to identify, feed and sterilise feral cats they may come across. We are supported by a number of private vets and are often assisted by Animal Allies. During TNR (trap, neuter, release) feral cats are humanely trapped and then spayed or neutered, vaccinated and treated for external and internal parasites after which they are returned to the location where they were collected. During the sterilization one of their ear tips are also clipped for easy identification as a sterilized cat. Feeding programs are set up and maintained by volunteers and cats are allowed to live out the rest of their natural lives with less risk of the population exploding and becoming a problem for the community. Volunteers monitoring the cats are also able to see when cats become ill and can then trap them and take them to the vet for the appropriate treatment. For these projects to be successful, we need volunteers to help feed cats, donations of wet cat food (pouches or tins) for trapping, dry cat food for continuous feeding, old towels, linen and blankets to cover traps with, and most importantantly funds for the sterilization. A donation of R350 will cover the sterilization, vaccination, deworming and defleaing of one cat. Any donations of food greatly assist our volunteers and we can arrange delivery points around Joburg. We’re not entirely sure what she’s checking for, but there has been plenty of climbing, investigating and general feral supervision involved, so we can only assume everything has passed inspection. ✔️🐱

🧡 Well… that’s NOT who we were looking for! 😂

Earlier this week we set the trap, hoping to catch a particular kitty.
And who wandered in? A completely different ginger guy. 🤦‍♀️😂

We don’t recognise him, so he doesn’t have a name, but we did recognise that lovely eartipped ear!

Which meant he had already been sterilised, so he got a very lucky reprieve and was released to carry on with his day.

🐾 But why do we eartip feral cats?

Because feral cats aren’t exactly going to show up with their medical records. 😂

An eartip is the easy-to-spot sign that a feral or community cat has already been sterilised. A small portion of the ear tip is removed while the cat is safely under anaesthetic during the procedure.

That way, when we see a cat in a colony, we can immediately tell:

“Eartip? ✔️ Already sterilised. Leave this one alone!”

It prevents cats from being unnecessarily trapped, stressed and put through another anaesthetic and operation, and helps us keep track of who still needs to be sterilised.

So the ginger guy got his freedom…

and we are still looking for the cat we actually wanted. 😂

Because around here, apparently the cats choose who gets trapped. 🐈‍⬛🎣
