Empowering Tomorrow: A Youth Day Tribute

As we commemorate Youth Day tomorrow, 16 June, we reflect on the courage, resilience, and potential of young people across South Africa. Chairman and Founder of Rhiza, Alef Meulenberg, shares a message on the importance of investing in and empowering today’s youth.

Throughout this week, we will continue sharing stories of empowerment from some of our youth highlighting their experiences, growth, and journeys.

To kick off the FIFA World Cup 2026, Rhiza, through the Maponya Community Hub and in partnership with Redefine, hosted a community viewing of South Africa vs Mexico.

Despite the winter chill, families came together in true Bafana Bafana spirit for an afternoon filled with food, fun and connection.

Although the result was not in our favour, the real victory was the unity, energy and pride shared by the community.

“Phansi with long queues! Soft life is all about affordable fees. Long live cleanliness!”

These words captured the excitement at the official relaunch and handover of the Winterveldt Clinic, where Mpathy welcomed another nursepreneur into its growing network.

The clinic will help improve access to affordable, quality healthcare while supporting local communities and easing pressure on nearby public facilities.

Congratulations to Sister Boitumelo Mokoena on achieving her dream of becoming a clinic owner and making a difference in her community.

Together, we’re building healthier communities through accessible primary healthcare.

Recently, members of the Rhiza Babuyile team joined social workers and nurses from clinics across Johannesburg for a two-day training facilitated by the Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative (REPSSI).

The training focused on strengthening psychosocial support skills, promoting resilience and well-being, and equipping participants with practical tools to better support individuals, families, and communities.

It was also a valuable opportunity to connect with professionals from different organisations, share experiences, and learn from diverse perspectives.

We are proud to invest in continuous learning that helps us provide stronger support and better services to the communities we serve.

Healthcare on the move!

On 12 May, an important step was taken towards improving healthcare access in the Kouga region. We’re excited to share that the Department of Health has officially approved Rhiza’s mobile clinic proposal, with services set to launch in July.

This initiative will help bring essential healthcare services closer to underserved communities, ensuring more people can access the care they need.

A big thank you to Ntombi and the team for their dedication in making this important project possible. Together, we're helping build healthier communities, one stop at a time.

Progress at Thuthuwa Farm continues as we strengthen our operations and improve how we prepare and deliver fresh produce 🌱.

We are now packing vegetables for several clients, an important milestone that reflects both growing demand and increased capacity. With our packshed taking shape and plans for a future cold chain system, we are laying the groundwork for even greater efficiency, quality, and scalability.

Discussions at Mphethi Mahlatsi Secondary School highlighted the realities many young people face when it comes to substance abuse. Teachers and learners reflected on how trauma, difficult home environments, peer pressure, and social media influence can shape the choices young people make.

One teacher shared the growing challenge schools face without enough social workers and counsellors to support learners dealing with personal struggles and trauma.

“When learners are constantly fighting or acting out, we often find deeper issues at home. Some are dealing with trauma and circumstances that go far beyond the classroom.”

Young people also spoke honestly about how substance abuse can become a coping mechanism for those facing abuse and instability at home.

“I think some of our peers start drinking because of what they are going through at home. Some are facing abuse, so they cope using alcohol and drugs, and then it becomes addiction.”

These conversations remind us that protecting our youth requires stronger support systems and collaboration between schools, families, and communities.
