EU Delegation in South Africa Programme Manager, Ms Funda Celikel Esser, visited FHR partners Callas Foundation, Abalimi Bezekhaya and Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) earlier this week in Athlone, Cape Town (Tuesday 8 October 2024).

Together, we celebrated the power of taking an intersectional approach to addressing GBV and its root causes. Callas Foundation offer First Responder training, journey with survivors in their struggle for justice before, through and beyond the courts, run a food kitchen from their premises, and are known for their referrals and powerful networking local-to-global, striving to ensure that no one is lost along the journey.

FHR partners with Abalimi Bezekhaya and NOAH in our Growing Food for Life programme that was born out of our GBV programme, to address food security, offering women in particular, and GBV survivors, a greater chance of independent choice and economic resilience for them and those that depend on them. We learned together and celebrated the power of this day-to-day community organising that concretely advances human rights and the promises of the Constitution.

This morning, Tue 22 October 2024, we're meeting with 5 colleagues from the recently established Mozambique National Human Rights Commission. Together we're exploring our respective ways of strengthening a human rights culture. One strand of our conversation is that we both support schools-level Human Rights Groups or Clubs. For Mozambique, the relationship is through a memorandum with the Department of Education. Our clubs are formed through our community partner organisations relationships within their communities.

"The clinic has asked us to stay for 3 hours after we visit them to speak about our free services to patients. They have given us a special room to have patients come to see us privately, and this is now a part of our GBV Help Desk strategy.”
