Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of June 16

The significance of the 50th Anniversary of June 16 lies in the enduring legacy of the courageous young people who stood at the forefront of the struggle for dignity, equality, and the right to education in their own language. Their sacrifice secured the freedom I enjoy today, the freedom to express myself openly, to embrace and learn in my mother tongue, and to take pride in my cultural identity and heritage. It is this legacy that instills confidence in me to champion my beliefs, defend my rights, and preserve the language and history that shape who I am and become.

As we commemorate this historic milestone, I honour a generation of youth that paid a profound price in pursuit of justice and transformation. Their struggle compels me to channel my energy and commitment towards a new national imperative: ensuring that every young person is empowered to participate meaningfully in the global economy. Through entrepreneurship, innovation, and skills development, today’s youth must continue the journey of transformation by confronting unemployment, reducing inequality, and overcoming poverty.

The sweat of the youth of 1976 secured political freedom; the sweat of today’s youth must secure economic freedom. By fostering entrepreneurial mindsets and creating opportunities for enterprise development, we can build a future where every young person becomes an active contributor to South Africa’s growth and prosperity.

Amandla! Entrepreneurship! Amandla!

Two generations. One purpose. One shared commitment to South Africa’s youth.

Fifty years after the June 16 Soweto Uprising, we reflect with deep gratitude on the courage of the young people of 1976 who stood up for their right to quality education and a better future. Their bravery and sacrifice created pathways that have shaped the opportunities we have been able to access today.

As a millennial manager and a Gen Alpha intern working side by side in the Marketing and Communications team at JA South Africa, we are a reflection of that legacy. We come from different generations, with different experiences and perspectives, but we are both beneficiaries of the doors opened by those who came before us.

Their fight was not only about their own futures; it was about generations they would never meet. It is because of their courage that we are able to learn, grow, work, and contribute toward building the South Africa we want to see.

Today, we honor their legacy not only through remembrance, but through action. Through the work we do with young people, we remain committed to ensuring that the next generation has access to the opportunities, support, and skills they need to realize their potential.

Because the story of June 16 did not end in 1976. It continues in classrooms, workplaces, communities, and in every young person who dares to dream of a better future.

Fifty years ago, young people stood up and changed the course of our nation’s history.

Today, as we commemorate Youth Day under the theme “RESET@50 – The Future Calls,” we are reminded that the future has always belonged to those brave enough to imagine something better and bold enough to act on it.

The youth of 1976 fought for the right to learn, to be heard, and to shape their own futures. Their legacy lives on in every young person who dares to dream, start a business, solve a problem, learn a new skill, or create opportunities where none existed before.

At JA South Africa, we see that spirit every day. In classrooms, communities, and boardrooms, young people are building the confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to participate in and contribute to the economy. Through financial literacy, entrepreneurship education, and work readiness programs, they are not waiting for the future, they are creating it!

This Youth Day, we honour those who came before us by investing in those who will carry South Africa forward.

Because freedom lives in every generation, and so does the power to shape what comes next.

Happy Youth Day, South Africa. 🇿🇦
