The fraymedia Foundation’s Mentorship Booster Programme: Skills Development Seminars brought together leading experts, practitioners and entrepreneurs to explore and respond to the key question:

What does it take to move from being a skilled journalist, communicator or media entrepreneur to building a sustainable business?

Across three sessions held in March, April and May, participants engaged with practical lessons on building, growing and leading media and communications businesses.

Key themes explored throughout the series included:

🔹 Building the Business with Naadiya Moosajee — defining your niche, clarifying your value proposition and identifying viable business models.

🔹 Growing the Business with Pat Roberts and Mbali Nhlengethwa — attracting clients, developing multiple revenue streams, strengthening partnerships and building compliance and credibility.

🔹 Leading the Business with Mac TinaShe Makwande — finding sustainable business models, scaling and pricing effectively, navigating uncertainty and building influence within the media ecosystem.

Hosted by Paula Fray and Bongiwe Tutu, the programme was designed to support early-stage women media and communications entrepreneurs in moving from passion and talent to long-term sustainability.

As the fraymedia Foundation continues its work to strengthen women’s leadership, entrepreneurship and business development across Africa, these seminar recordings remain a valuable resource for anyone building a media, journalism or communications venture.

What happens when women are given the space, support and opportunity to grow as leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers?

The fraymedia Foundation Stories of Change highlight the journeys of women who are building businesses, strengthening communities, advancing their careers and creating meaningful impact across the media and communications landscape. Their stories demonstrate that leadership is not only about personal success, that it is about opening doors, amplifying voices and creating opportunities for others.

Across different sectors and countries, these women reflect the power of mentorship, skills development, networks and determination in helping transform ideas into action and purpose into impact.

Some of the key themes emerging from their stories include:

🔹 The importance of investing in women’s leadership and entrepreneurship
🔹 Building sustainable businesses that create social impact
🔹 The value of mentorship, learning and professional networks
🔹 Strengthening representation and visibility in media and communications
🔹 Turning challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation

As the fraymedia Foundation continues its work across Africa, these stories serve as a reminder that lasting change is often driven by women who are committed to shaping a more inclusive, representative and sustainable future.

✨ Our recent changemakers include Sibongile Mabena, Anetta Mangxaba, Mutshidzi Portia Munyai, and Nontobeko Mtshali. Join us in celebrating their milestones!

Grow your business from visibility, to value, to viability.

In today’s media landscape, being seen is no longer enough. The real challenge is turning visibility into value. And ultimately, into sustainable, viable media businesses.

A powerful central focus from insights given by ICF Master Coach (MCC) Pat Roberts during the fraymedia Foundation Mentorship Booster Programme session.

Building a business is emotional. Pat Roberts began by demystifying the emotional experience of entrepreneurship.

“If you are feeling completely comfortable all the time, are you really trying hard enough?” she asked.

At the heart of Pat's advice was a fundamental reframing; Businesses do not sell services, they solve problems.

“The more tightly you define your solution and your audience,” she explained, “the easier it will be to reach them with impact.”

“Which handbag is your business?”

This was the powerful challenge posed by Naadiya Moosajee, and it cuts straight to the heart of what many entrepreneurs get wrong.

Too many businesses are trying to be everything to everyone. The result? Confusion in the market, weak positioning, and missed opportunities.

“The worst entrepreneurs,” she noted, “are the ones that don’t know which handbag they are, and they’re trying to sell to everybody.”

The metaphor is simple, but the lesson is critical:

Your pricing, positioning, and perceived value must align.

If you position yourself as bespoke and premium, your pricing must reflect that. If it doesn’t, your audience hesitates, not because they don’t want your product, but because they don’t understand it.

This insight formed part of a broader set of reflections from the fraymedia Foundation Build The Business session with Naadiya Moosajee. The session is the first of a three-part Mentorship Booster Programme webinar series aimed at helping founders move from freelance work to sustainable enterprise, to build with clarity, confidence, and sustainability.

Because knowing your handbag isn't just a metaphor — it’s a strategy.

Changing the narrative isn’t just a tagline — it’s a responsibility.

In this powerful conversation with Paula Fray featured in The Good Business Journal, we are reminded why media must be understood and protected as a public good.

At a time when misinformation is rife and trust is fragile, journalism plays a critical role in shaping informed societies, holding power to account, and strengthening democracy. Public trust, as Paula highlights, remains the true currency of journalism, and it is earned through integrity, curiosity, and rigorous storytelling.

Curiosity still wins. It drives better questions, deeper reporting, and more inclusive narratives, especially across African media landscapes that are constantly evolving in the face of digital disruption and resource challenges.

At fraymedia Foundation, we continue to champion ethical, inclusive, and impactful media, because the stories we tell shape the futures we build.
