From October 2025 to July 2026, Planact’s Round 4 project turned working for common good into measurable impact across our 22 partner communities in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The numbers tell part of the story:

Planact, in partnership with Enabel and the VITO - Flemish Institute for Technological Research, is hosting a webinar to share findings from the indoor heat monitoring project conducted in Choba informal settlement and Wattville township in the Metropolitan cities of Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.

The session will explore how housing types, building materials, and environmental conditions influence indoor temperature, and discuss innovative approaches for creating more resilient, climate-responsive settlements.

The webinar is particularly relevant as South Africa gears up for the upcoming El Niño phenomenon, during which South Africa is expected to experience hotter and drier conditions.

5 October 2026 | World Habitat Day

As we mark World Habitat Day 2026 under the theme “Adequate Housing for All,” we are bringing back an important milestone in the journey towards secure tenure for Benicon residents in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga.

Their journey reminds us that when communities organise, speak with a collective voice and engage institutions constructively, they can influence the systems and decisions that shape their lives. When communities have security from evictions and title to their land, they are more willing to invest in their settlements and create an upward spiral towards stronger socio-economic and developmental outcomes characterised by improved access to basic services and governance outcomes.

Although their experiences were captured in 2020, Benicon’s experience shows what is possible when communities come together to claim their rights and engage meaningfully for better governance and service delivery.

At Planact, we recognise the importance of informed and meaningful participation. These discussions on opinion polls, voter autonomy and electoral integrity are particularly relevant as we approach .

Planact was among the 72 accredited organisations that will put together an election observer mission for the elections to be held on 4 November 2026.

Yesterday, we were part of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) briefing for domestic observers, where we were taken through the important issues to note as we observe the election:

1. The Code of Conduct for observers
2. The roles and responsibilities of observers
3. The need to be accredited with the Electoral Commission to qualify as an observer.
