It is with heavy hearts that we learnt of the passing of Peter Sumner on 26 October. Peter was the chairperson of the Camp Delta committee for many years, and was passionate about the campsite, as well as Scouting in general.

We post here a message from Gary Pienaar, Chef Commissioner of Scouts SA, following Peter's passing:

Gone Home : Peter ‘Butch’ Sumner

It is with great sadness that I bring news of Peter Sumner’s passing this morning, after a long battle with cancer. ‘Butch’ to those that knew him well, is the longest serving member of the 1st Bryanston Scout Group, having joined the Cub Pack at 8 years old in 1965. In those early days, much of Bryanston was still farmland, and the Group met in an old building where the current car wash stands at the Cramerview shopping centre on Main Road. Later the Group moved to it’s current purpose-built premises on West Hertford Road.

Peter served Scouting in a variety of roles, as Assistant Troop Scouter, Troop Scouter, Scout Group Leader and also Assistant District Commissioner Scout Programme and District Commissioner for a time. But the red and black scarf of 1st Bryanston was always his home.

A man of few words, whose seemingly ‘stern and strict appearance’ (no doubt influenced by his Navy service) often contradicting the big heart beneath, was well known to the Scouts of the former Jukskei then Sandton District. Peter was involved in many District events over many years – including the annual Camp & Cook Competition, Pioneering Competition, and the Skillkana. But it is the annual District Gala held after the Founder’s Day parade that he is most associated with. An event which he organized and ran for more than 30 years. One of his novel innovations was the ‘cork race’, as a way to get all the Cubs in the pool at once. And so, the 200-litre barrel of wine corks has lived in the Sumner garage ever since.

We remember Peter as someone who was always there, always willing to lend a hand when needed, and when pressed with a story to share. I remember him being present at camps and activities, long after those from his generation had traded comfortable beds for camping on the hard ground. For I think it was in the outdoors and on camp that Peter was happiest. Even in ill health he continued to serve, being the ‘extra hands at Friday Troop meetings, and volunteering to assist with the catering for the first Magaliesberg Senior Scout Adventure in 2022.

So, we remember our brother Scout who was been called to rest at the eternal campfire. A Scouting salute from the countless 1st Bryanston and Sandton District Scouts and Scouters, whose personal journeys have been influenced and impacted by your long and dedicated service. Thank you.

A great tree may have fallen … but you will not be forgotten!
