The Johannesburg Institute of Social Services (J**S) is a child and family welfare institute that extends services to individuals, families and communities irrespective of race, gender or creed. J**S endeavours to deliver services that reflect the demographics of South Africa. Child and Family Care Units operate from the two J**S Centres in Mayfair and Lenasia. Social work services and community d

evelopment/empowerment programmes including the complementary charity work of volunteers is delivered to the community from the two J**S Centres. Child abuse awareness and prevention programmes, an HIV/AIDS programme focusing on orphaned and vulnerable children as well as educare and outreach facilities in informal settlements are some of the community work programmes that J**S is involved in. Two Senior Citizens Luncheon Clubs enjoy the use of the J**S Centres. Included under the J**S banner is a school in Lenasia for children with special needs, the JISWA School, as well as a Profound Unit for severely mentally challenged children. J**S is an important centre for the training of student social workers from the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg who do their practical work under the supervision of J**S’ social work managers.

As we begin Child Protection Month, let us be reminded that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving, and protected environment. This month serves as a call for all of us to stand together in safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of children. Under this year’s theme, “Working Together in Ending Violence Against Children,” we encourage communities, families, and stakeholders to play an active role in protecting and nurturing our children.
