It is very important to note that 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an important occasion, but it should not be the only time we respect and protect these vulnerable groups. May every day be a protection day!

Today marks the anniversary of the death of President Nelson Mandela. Tata Madiba envisaged a society of human dignity, equality, and freedom. Indeed, he would have been outraged at the persistent levels of violence against women and children in South Africa.

The past three months have been a whirlwind of activity within the education project, marked by numerous events and workshops. We had the privilege of engaging with parents on critical topics such as su***de prevention, parenting skills, and the impact of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) on children. While these subjects were undoubtedly challenging, the expertise of social workers from JRS and the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) brought ease and compassion to these conversations. Parents not only gained valuable insights but also shared their personal experiences, creating a space of mutual learning and support.
Children, as the heart of JRS's education projects, were also a key focus during this period. Alongside the homework tutor, we facilitated two impactful workshops centered on goal setting and resilience, as well as a campaign addressing bullying. Hearing the voices of young people during these sessions was truly inspiring. Many showed a willingness to make positive changes in their lives, and it reaffirmed the importance of addressing issues like bullying early on. Tackling such behaviors at a young age can help prevent their escalation into adulthood, whether in workplaces, communities, or other spaces. Children bring fresh and unique perspectives to these discussions, enriching the learning experience for everyone involved.

This year the theme for 16 Days of Activism is “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence Against Women and Children.” This is all very well but hundreds of thousands of women and children remain unsafe and insecure. Let it not take another 30 years to end these practices

Today is World Disability Day. Women and Children with disabilities are among society's most marginalised and disenfranchised. Many live lives mired in poverty and are grossly mistreated, not receiving proper care. On this occasion, let us all think of the women and children in the world who are mistreated and think of such individuals as "differently abled" and able to have dignified lives

The health team has been very busy recently!

We recently held a Community Outreach session in Mayfair where we discussed Hypertension and Diabetes and encouraged other community organizations to showcase their services available to the community.

To help reduce the burden of working in tough circumstances, we provide our beneficiaries with debriefing to talk through their experiences in the field. In this session, they made beautiful paper mache bowls.

JRS SA was recently invited to participate in the WITS Disability Indaba where the rights of people with disabilities were explored. It was an insightful day full of talks, testimonies of the successes of people with disabilities and networking with partner organisations.

Did you know that there Is a profound lack of services for refugees and asylum seekers when it comes to women and children who have been abused. Many have no place to go for shelter and crisis intervention. As a result crimes are not reported and vicious cycles emerge. Let us all lobby for change as active citizens!

Section 28 of the Constitution states that a child may not be subject to "abuse, neglect or degradation." Furthermore it states that "the best interests of the child are of paramount importance in every matter concerning the child." VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
