Rethinking Substance Use, Prevention and Recovery πŸƒ
On 26 June, the world observes the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking β€” a necessary reminder that substance use remains one of the most urgent health, family and community concerns of our time.
But awareness alone is not enough.

Too often, substance use is still hidden behind shame, fear, silence and misunderstanding. The person struggling may feel judged before they feel supported. Families may recognise the warning signs but feel unsure whether they are overreacting, enabling, intervening too late or saying the wrong thing. Workplaces may notice changes in performance, attendance, conduct or wellbeing, but lack the language and pathways to respond responsibly.
This is where the conversation must mature.

Substance use cannot be reduced to poor choices or moral failure. It is often entangled with emotional distress, trauma, isolation, untreated mental health concerns, family strain, social pressure and the absence of timely support. At the same time, compassion cannot mean avoidance. Recovery requires honesty, accountability, structure and access to practical care.

At The Recovery Foundation, we believe support must be both humane and useful.
That means helping people understand what recovery can look like before a crisis becomes the only entry point. It means guiding families, professionals, direction, communities, education and workplaces in more informed ways to respond. It means creating pathways where people can move out of secrecy and towards treatment, connection and sustainable change.

Substance use not only affects the person struggling. It moves through families, workplaces and communities, often carried in silence long before support is reached.

When shame is replaced with informed guidance, practical pathways and compassionate connection, recovery becomes more visible, more accessible and more possible. For The Recovery Foundation, this is our work: championing recovery, changing lives, and building a society where substance use is met with understanding, direction, and meaningful access to support.
