Kodumela Bokamoso is a non-profit organization that has been established as a response to the growing need to develop leaders within rural communities. Rural com-munities face significant development challenges. Kodumela has chosen to reach out to the youth in these communities and assist them in becoming the leaders they need to be to see development in their communities. The approach is to targe
t high schools that are struggling and assist them with turna-round strategies that allow them to produce good matric results as well as better quality learners who are able to succeed beyond high school. The programs that Kodumela will run with the schools will depend on the specific problems that the school faces but the primary activities will involve learner support, career guidance, sports and leadership development. Infrastructure development of the school will also be on the agenda. Currently Kodumela has chosen to partner Nakedi Secondary School in Limpopo. The strategy is to test intervention strategies and see which work best to develop a formalized program. Since the partnership was initiated in 2008, the school has im-proved its matric pass rate over the years. The main strategies employed thus far have been career guidance and motivational talks. Computers have also been orga-nized and donated by Nedbank for use at the school. The organization has also en-gaged to with School Governing Body and the teachers to get buy in for future pro-grams to help the students. All this has been done at the cost of the Kodumela Bo-kamoso’ directors.
