Scottish Terrier Rescue South Africa

Scottish Terrier Rescue South Africa Networking scotties in need of new loving families but also lost or found Scotties in need of a safe haven (if we are able to) as we do not own kennels.

Also rehoming scotties if we are able to. Always looking for approved foster homes to assist us. PLEASE CONTACT US VIA INBOX/MESSAGE

The Scottish Terrier Rescue SA page is a vehicle or platform to assist the various shelters across SA in rehoming Scotties and Scottie crosses. We also rescue when needed. We do not advocate or encourage the selling of puppies either privately or from petshops or bre

eders on our page whatsoever. We do however promote the rehoming of Scotties that find themselves in shelters for whatever reason and support the principle of ADOPT DONT SHOP wholeheartedly! Although we appreciate support from all over the world, we CANNOT help with adoptions outside South African borders but you are welcome to share the Scotties with your South African friends! PLEASE NOTE
Posts asking for puppies for sale or any other scottie or posts puppies for sale, will be deleted. This is a rescue page, we deal with the puppies (if any) that were bred for money and thrown away, we deal with the scotties (plenty) landing in shelters because humans failed them, we deal with RESCUE. ADOPTION POLICY
*If you have an open pool, we will not approve you. The same applies to fish ponds. Scotties can drown easily due to their short legs and hair. Even if your own scotties swim easily, we will not consider you, accidents happen very quickly. Pools must be properly fenced or have a solid cover over. Floating covers will not be approved. Pool nets must have small holes.
*No palisade fencing will be approved if the dogs will be seen from the street or strangers can reach through and come close enough to try steal or poison the dogs.
*We insist that our dogs sleep inside, they are family after all! They are so much easier to poison when kept outside, especially at night. This will count in your favour when considering your application. And the older the dogs, the more reason so!
*All dogs WILL be sterilised prior to adoption, unless younger than 6 months old. We will arrange for sterilisation at appropriate age. We do NOT home our dogs to homes with unsterilised dogs, UNLESS there is a valid medical reason confirmed by your vet or if the doggie is very old. Apart from medical issues with them not being sterilised, you also put all animals on the property at risk, as dog thieves tend to go with unsterilised doggies who they can use as breeding machines. Unsterilised dogs also tend to ‘escape’ more easily, once again that puts all animals in danger of roaming the streets. Remember, it is about what is RIGHT AND SAFE for the scottie, its not about your feelings.
*We INSIST on a meet and greet with your own doggies, THIS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE!! *We feel strongly about scotties having access to the driveway, it is potentially unsafe and scotties like to run when gates open. We are strict about driveways that is accessible to the scottie, too many get out the gate and subsequently get lost or are easily stolen. Pallisade fencing must be secure with chicken mesh, to ensure no escape through the gaps.
*Home checks will ONLY BE CONDUCTED IF WE SEE PER YOUR APPLICATION THAT YOU ARE A MATCH FOR THE SCOTTIE(S)
*Adoption fees vary due to the different vets we make use of for the steri, innocs and chipping (their rates differ), but can range between R500 and R1 600 per dog. Fees for puppies will be adjusted accordingly. The fee will be reduced if more than one scottie (to same home) is adopted. THE FEE IS ONLY DUE ONCE THE APPLICATION HAS BEEN APPROVED, THE HOME CHECK PASSED AND THE MEET AND GREET WAS SUCCESSFUL. THESE RULES ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE!!!!! FOSTER POLICY
*To become a foster human, you will need to apply via a foster application, obtainable from [email protected] as well as [email protected]
*A home check will be done, and if everything is in order, you will be placed on a list for when a foster is needed.
*REQUIREMENTS
All dogs must sleep inside!!! Pools must be properly fenced or have solid covers over. No floating covers will be allowed. Pool nets must have small holes. Your property must be secure. Gaps in pallisade fencing must be secured with chicken mesh. No access to the driveway. Medical bills, grooming and food will be covered by Scottish Terrier Rescue. Your own dogs must be well socialised. Your own dogs must also be sterilised, we get sick dogs in that cannot be sterilised immediately and cannot place them with unsterilised dogs (breeding and fighting between male dogs over a female on heat etc)
Fosters have first option to adopt their foster scottie, adoption fee applicable. AUCTIONS/DONATIONS/SCOTTIE WALKS

A feel good story from Jake Botha on why adopting is so rewarding!

FROM HEARTBREAK TO HEAVEN:
This story dates back to hard lockdown, when a throw-away wild scottie was caught in the wilderness and taken in by a vet. As an essential service she took him in and we apllied to adopt Brakkies. Turned out to be the most adorable and loving boy. Fast forward to late 2025 when we felt he was too lonely as a single boy and started looking around to adopt a friend. Zoey had been kennelled at SPCA for 8 months with not a single person showing interest in her. Brakkies' meet-and-greet with her was disappointing as they totally ignored each other in the enclosure, but we nevertheless adopted her as we knew that her lengthy stay with no plan for her meant one thing.. Once home, a from-the-pound-to-the-parlour newly named Meisie remained stand-offish with Brakkies and with us - we were wondering if we had made a mistake. Then, on Scottish Terrier Rescue Society page, we saw this black little face (Jakey), a stud-dog that had been retired by a breeder and was bounced between homes, then advertised on FB 'for free' and with the intervention of the Society ended up in foster care. We applied, made the grade and fetched him in Secunda to join Brakkies and (a freshly adopted) Meisie. On the way back Jakey was renamed Thabo (there can't be 2 x Jake in one household). The homecoming introduction was mayhem. Brakkies the brat was NOT having this tiny boy with his huge personality. We had to call in advice, separate the boys and watch them dagger-eyeing each other for days.. Brakkies was tense and we were super stressed about the upheaval .. Days went by before we dared brief supervised encounters between the upset little monsters. Weeks went by with them ignoring each other and giving side-eyes. We knew we had to persist. Everyone got the same attention, the same rules and the same treatment. We were adamant to make this work. Three months went by to now.. And now..? Boys hang out together outside, running after each other (and only playing in secret ..🙄). Sometimes we still see a vibe and quickly break the tension - it's true, dogs really are like three-year-olds... Meisie is having her best life as a lady of leisure. Outings to the dog park are off leash and a total celebration of fun. Food is fun. Playdates are ecstatic events. We are a super-happy family now , however we did it. To prospective adoptive dog parents: You can never make a mistake to adopt a dog (or a rescue), even if it takes adjustment. Dog hearts are all the same - they beat for love, routine and stability. Give them time to settle down and they will reward you with amazing loyalty and joy.

Sad, sad news. 💔 Sweet Scotty got bitten by a snake yesterday and passed away within 15 minutes at his owner's feet. Godspeed little darling. We are so heartbroken. 💔 31 May 2026

29 May update: Poor Scotty - still desperately hoping for a family to fall in love and whisk him off to a life of love and TLC. Will it be you? Please share this gorgeous boy folks - time is running out.. !

Meet Scotty! An adorable little brindle Scottie fella of approximately 9 years who is currently in NELSPRUIT and needs a new home by early May 2026!
Scotty is approximately 9 years old and already sterilised and his vaccinations and deworming will be updated prior to adoption. He also needs to be chipped.
Scotty tends to be a bit of a loner preferring his own company to do his own thing in the garden even though he currently shares his home with an elderly JR. He has not been exposed to children in the home and cats are a definite no-no.
He is fully house trained and is used to sleeping indoors at night but does on the odd occasion, prefer to sleep outside on warmer nights. He is not crazy about being groomed but does tolerate it . He has not been walked as he gets plenty of exercise on the plot where he currently lives. He also doesn’t know how to play with a ball or a rope toy. Scotty has no known health issues except he does have a dry skin on his back which is kept under control with Coconut Oil. Scotty is not an excessive barker and will only bark when visitors arrive to raise the alert.
The most endearing thing about Scotty is that he is a “talker” and will ask so nicely by sitting upright on his back legs to beg for a treat! 😃
If you are keen to have this lovely fella join your family, the following criteria will apply:
*No access to your driveway or front garden
*No open swimming pools or fish ponds
*Children to be 12 years or older as he has not been exposed to young children
*Can be an only dog as his prefers his own company to other dogs
*Definitely no cats
*Must sleep indoors at night
*Preferably have a human at home during the day for company.

If you feel this lovely boy would fit in well into your family and you tick all the above criteria, please urgently email us both: Desiree on [email protected] and Colleen on [email protected] so that we can send you an application to complete. A reduced adoption fee, strict home check and Meet and Greet applies. Looking forward to receiving your emails real soon.
