PRESS RELEASE 20 June 2026.

World Refugee Day 2026: Stand with Refugees, Until Everyone is Safe.

As the world commemorates World Refugee Day on 20 June, the Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA) joins millions across the globe in honouring the courage, resilience, and contributions of refugees who have been forced to flee conflict, persecution, violence, and human rights violations in search of safety and protection.

This year's theme, "Stand with Refugees, Until Everyone is Safe," is a call to action. It reminds us that solidarity with refugees must go beyond words and translate into concrete efforts to protect their rights, dignity, and inclusion in society.

Locally, World Refugee Day 2026 comes at a time of growing anti-migrant sentiment and xenophobic tensions in parts of South Africa. CoRMSA is deeply concerned by incidents of discrimination, intimidation, hate speech, vigilantism, and unlawful actions targeting refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants. Such actions undermine the country’s determination to build social cohesion, threaten peaceful coexistence, and violate the constitutional values of dignity, equality, and freedom....Read more

World Refugee Day 2026 Commemoration.

Today, we are in Musina, Limpopo Province, commemorating 2026 through a community dialogue under the global theme:

"Stand with Refugees. Until Everyone Is Safe."

We are bringing together refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, host community members, government stakeholders, civil society organisations, and community leaders for a day of meaningful conversations, learning, cultural exchange, and solidarity.

The dialogue creates a space for open discussions on refugee rights, social cohesion, peaceful coexistence, and the importance of building communities where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and included.

As we celebrate World Refugee Day, we also celebrate the resilience, strength, and contributions of refugees and asylum seekers who continue to enrich our communities every day.

Together, let's stand with refugees. Together, let's build stronger and more inclusive communities.

National Youth Day, 16 June.

The 2026 commemoration is held under the theme “RESET@50 – The Future Calls”, with the slogan “Our National Commitment to the Future, for Freedom Lives in Every Generation”, and is further anchored by the focus “Mapping the Barriers: Auditing Access for Economic Inclusion”.

On this National Youth Day, we honour the legacy of young people who fought for justice, dignity, and equality in South Africa.

The growing discrimination, exclusion, and violence against migrants and refugees undermine youth development and deprive both migrant and South African youth of opportunities to thrive.

Our shared challenges of unemployment, poverty, and inequality require unity, not division.

We call on all young people to reject xenophobia, misinformation, and hatred, and to champion mutual respect and solidarity.

Together, we can build a socially cohesive and inclusive South Africa where every young person has the opportunity to contribute and succeed.
