With University of Johannesburg – we just got recognised as one of their top fans! 🎉

We value education - because it is one of the things that no one can take from you :)

🌍Yesterday our organisation attended an important session of the SWARM Capacity Building workshop for Academic Staff, Stakeholders and Students in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg Uj-Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.

👌The session included engagement on ideas to improve waste management solutions for the City of Joburg to collect waste across the city, specifically in township communities where Pikitup is the service provider.

📚We were privileged to be exposed to the current research studies conducted by PHD candidates and the Professors involved in such research studies.

🏫An international university professor also presented what their University in Denmark has managed to achieve using true collaboration across the public and private sector. A major lesson in collaboration for South Africans; That resulted in the supply of heating and cooling energy using waste management practices directly from their University.

🌎Insight into how our organisation shared our mindset on collaboration and what it will take to address Youth Unemployment in the community where we are based at a no fee paying high school in Eldorado Park.

🌿Thanks to the Air Quality Awareness campaign programme from Seriti Institute - NPC we have a focused approach on environment awareness and action centred practices that lead to impact starting with the youth and learners in our community.

🏫Education and learning will never end, this is why New Pathways Community Education and Training management and youth and participants on our programmes continue to take advantage of upskilling and networking opportunities.

🙌This past week we attended two events arranged by the Environmental Infrastructure Services Development (EISD).

1. On 20 May 2026, we attended a workshop on Environmental By-Laws that will be updated for waste pickers and waste management within 2026.
2. On 22 May 2026, we attended a Nature Based Solutions pre-workshop where we as NPOs who work in the environmental space, were able to view a Theatre production revealing many aspects of Pollution, Air Quality Awareness and Environmental changes that come about in the City of Joburg.

🇿🇦With the responsibility we have to change our society we are moving towards equipping ourselves and making connections with those in the space who can assist our objectives collaboratively.

💼 Today, 20 May 2026, our organisation attended a session at Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park on By-Laws relating to air pollution and waste management hosted by Environmental Infrastructure Services Development (EISD), our network partner.

🫁 It is clear that the Seriti Institute - NPC Breathe Better Together campaign, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and Breathe Cities (The Clean Air Fund), is a necessary step in raising awareness within our communities across Johannesburg. We have been part of this awareness campaign, along with 33 other community-based organisations across Johannesburg, since October 2025.

🐾The Gauteng Department of Environment is active in our communities and aligned with the action we are taking within our community to ensure that future generations can live and breathe in a better environment.

👌 We are on our way to creating By-Laws that can be implemented with actionable consequences for those who overstep. The maximum fine that can be issued is R5000; this may seem like a small amount for someone who works, but for those within our marginalised communities with a high rate of unemployment, this amount is significant enough to evoke behaviour change.

🎗️ Non-profit and community-based organisations are excellent sources of networking partners for sharing knowledge and raising awareness. By collaborating with stakeholders in the private and public sectors, we create sustainable change.

🙌 Our organisation is already seeing the change in primary school, high school and youth within the community we operate in, where they are more proactive since our initiation of the project in October 2025.

👍 We look forward to the upcoming changes in the bylaws this year, specifically related to waste pickers and waste management. Pikitup, in partnership with communities, councillors, JMD, SAPS, regional directors and ward committees, has an obligation to change the behaviour and mindset. Reporting infringements with evidence and proven negative actions is what is needed to make a difference.

🏁 Join us in our mission to create positive change within our communities. Our awareness program will continue with the creation of green spaces, planting trees and vegetables and creating or enhancing community and school gardens.

😎Our Eldorado Park kids gardening club is cultivating a sense of community and purpose, as they learn and grow together.

🏡The kids will soon be planting trees and seedlings in community gardens, following the lead of our Youth on the Seriti Air Quality Awareness programme, who are already making a positive impact.

🙏Thanks to Rand Water, Seriti Institute - NPC, City of Joburg, and Breathe Cities, we're empowering the next generation to create sustainable change.

🎯By growing their own food, they can improve food security, reduce hunger, and foster green spaces.

📌We're grateful for the opportunity to nurture their potential, and we appreciate any support that can help us continue our community outreach project.

To touch a child inappropriately and even think of crossing the line is unimaginable and cruel. Please 🥺🙏 report abuse and speak up of you are being made to feel uncomfortable or do something that goes against your morality. If it feels wrong. It is wrong.

In terms of Sections 15 and 16 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007, any sexual activity involving a child under 16 is illegal regardless of consent. Reported statutory r**e cases have increased, with 8,984 child abuse cases (including 3,258 sexual abuse cases) recorded in the first three quarters of 2025/26, according to the National Child Protection Register. Statutory r**e cases rose from 127 in 2024/25 to 199 in 2025/26, based on Department of Justice statistics. These statistics indicate a growing risk and vulnerability among children, and sadly many cases remain hidden due to stigma, family pressure, and lack of legal awareness.
