💼 Today, 20 May 2026, our organisation attended a session at Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park on By-Laws relating to air pollution and waste management hosted by Environmental Infrastructure Services Development (EISD), our network partner.
🫁 It is clear that the Seriti Institute - NPC Breathe Better Together campaign, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and Breathe Cities (The Clean Air Fund), is a necessary step in raising awareness within our communities across Johannesburg. We have been part of this awareness campaign, along with 33 other community-based organisations across Johannesburg, since October 2025.
🐾The Gauteng Department of Environment is active in our communities and aligned with the action we are taking within our community to ensure that future generations can live and breathe in a better environment.
👌 We are on our way to creating By-Laws that can be implemented with actionable consequences for those who overstep. The maximum fine that can be issued is R5000; this may seem like a small amount for someone who works, but for those within our marginalised communities with a high rate of unemployment, this amount is significant enough to evoke behaviour change.
🎗️ Non-profit and community-based organisations are excellent sources of networking partners for sharing knowledge and raising awareness. By collaborating with stakeholders in the private and public sectors, we create sustainable change.
🙌 Our organisation is already seeing the change in primary school, high school and youth within the community we operate in, where they are more proactive since our initiation of the project in October 2025.
👍 We look forward to the upcoming changes in the bylaws this year, specifically related to waste pickers and waste management. Pikitup, in partnership with communities, councillors, JMD, SAPS, regional directors and ward committees, has an obligation to change the behaviour and mindset. Reporting infringements with evidence and proven negative actions is what is needed to make a difference.
🏁 Join us in our mission to create positive change within our communities. Our awareness program will continue with the creation of green spaces, planting trees and vegetables and creating or enhancing community and school gardens.
