πΎ EDUCATIONAL ADVISORY: WHEN YOUR PET NEEDS VETERINARY CARE πΎ
Prevention is always better than cure β and preparation can make all the difference.
Recently, we have received an increasing number of calls from members of the public seeking veterinary assistance, often during unexpected emergencies when finances are already stretched.
As an NPO and SPCA, we understand just how quickly veterinary expenses can add up. We also understand that emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. An unexpected illness, accident or sudden change in your petβs health can leave any owner feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn.
That is why we want to share a friendly but important reminder: please plan for your petβs medical needs before an emergency occurs.
πΆ DID YOU KNOW?
Many people think that their local SPCA has a veterinarian on site who can attend to their pet whenever medical assistance is needed. Unfortunately, this is not the case for most SPCAs, including the Edenvale SPCA.
We rely on private veterinary practices for veterinary treatment, and this means that costs are involved when animals in our care require medical attention.
π± HOW CAN YOU PREPARE FOR UNEXPECTED VETERINARY EXPENSES?
Here are a few practical steps every pet owner can consider:
π° 1. Start a dedicated pet savings fund.
Even small, regular contributions can build up over time and help you manage unexpected veterinary bills when they arise.
π₯ 2. Speak to your preferred veterinary practice.
Ask whether they offer an account facility or allow you to make advance deposits towards future treatment. Find out about their payment policies before you need emergency care.
π©Ί 3. Consider pet medical aid or insurance.
Explore the available options and compare premiums, exclusions, waiting periods, benefit limits and emergency cover to find a plan that suits your circumstances.
π 4. Keep your veterinary contacts readily available.
Know which practices operate after hours, where your nearest emergency veterinary hospital is located, and how to reach them. In an emergency, having this information at hand can save valuable time.
π¨ 5. Do not delay urgent treatment.
If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, is experiencing seizures, has suffered serious trauma or may have swallowed something poisonous, contact a veterinarian immediately. Call ahead if possible and follow their instructions. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen because you are unsure where to go.

π HOW CAN THE PUBLIC HELP THE EDENVALE SPCA?
One of the most meaningful ways you can help any SPCA is by taking responsibility for the animals in your own care.
Providing appropriate food, clean water, safe shelter, vaccinations, parasite prevention, sterilisation and timely veterinary treatment helps keep your pets healthy and prevents avoidable suffering.
Responsible pet ownership also means planning financially for their needs and understanding where to seek help when something goes wrong.
We know that life can be unpredictable, and we are not here to judge anyone facing financial difficulties. Our aim is to encourage preparation, share useful information and help pet owners make informed decisions before they find themselves in a crisis.
