Brown Lekekela (also known as Ramapulane Lekekela) is a prominent South African community volunteer, trauma counsellor, and human rights defender who founded the Green Door Charity. He is widely recognised for providing a safe haven, emotional support, and emergency services to victims of domestic abuse and gender-based violence (GBV). [1, 2, 3]

The Green Door Shelter: He established this crisis center out of his own backyard in Extension 6, Diepsloot. It serves as a critical bridge between victims and the local police station. [3, 4, 5]
Crisis Assistance: The shelter delivers temporary, stage-one housing for up to five days. It supplies survivors with a safe environment, immediate counselling, clothing, and essential survival kits. [6, 7, 8]
Financial Empowerment: Lekekela collaborates with organizations like Hand in Hand Southern Africa to teach vulnerable women financial management and entrepreneurship to break their financial dependence on abusers. [9]

Background & Early Career
Born in Botshabelo in the Free State, Lekekela moved to Gauteng in 2007. Rejecting standard employment expectations, he pursued community activism. He initially began as a peer educator distributing condoms and conducting HIV/AIDS prevention training for Vuselela. In 2011, he started volunteering at the Diepsloot Police Victim Support Centre. There, he realized many women dropped their cases or never made it to the station safely, prompting him to open his own community-embedded refuge in 2013. [1, 2, 11]
