The Family Africa

The Family Africa http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtdS7S9Qc5Q We follow a holistic approach to welfare involving the mind, body and spirit.

The Family Africa is a faith based organisation bringing real hope for the future to thousands of people from previously disadvantaged groups in South Africa. To this end we work on three levels:
1.Short Term:
Immediate relief through feeding schemes, provision of clothing and blankets and response to local disasters.
2. Medium term:
Education and training including basic skills training, HIV/AID

S awareness programmes in primary and secondary schools and the production of materials to assist prevention and promote attitude change.
3. Long Term:
Spiritual, emotional and psychological support. Taking a look at our history and our residential training centre
Since it opened 10 years ago, our residential training centre has trained full time volunteers from many different countries: South Africa, United Kingdom, America, France, Mexico, Italy and Australia, Portugal, Spain, Germany. At present we have 26 adults and children from seven countries living and working together. The residential centre serves several important functions and acts as a training centre for the volunteers where they receive instruction in counselling, project management, fund raising, HIV/AIDS education, public relations etc. It also provides accommodation and food for the full time, unpaid volunteers so that they can reach out into the community based projects of HIV/AIDS support groups, children’s clubs, HIV/AIDS education in primary and secondary schools as well as youth counselling and Christian leadership training courses. Projects which are ongoing 52 weeks a year only take place because we have the residential centre as our base. The centre also runs camps for teenagers throughout the year where young people are encouraged to follow positive values and make important life choices as well as participate in team building exercises. Approximately 25 teenagers at a time benefit from these in house camps. Seminars on the topics of parenting, education and counselling also take place on an occasional basis. Our centre also acts as place of rest and recuperation for some of our volunteers who are now based in other African countries such as Zambia or Nigeria, where the field conditions are often very difficult. We have a real need to find sponsorship for the running costs of our training centre so that not only this very worthwhile training can continue but also the valuable community projects which depend on the centre for their continued success.

We had a lovely but simple Candle light. We had one candle burning representing 2025 and everyone shared what they were thankful for durung the year. Some gave gave lengthy testimonials of how they found out they were HIV positive, their disbelief, their tials and tribulations and how they came to terms with it through the counselling of our dear Mama Peggy.
Also women who had started to small businesses and the men who have daily tended the food garden, which is now flourinshing, were highlighted and received well deserved applause.
After the heart sharing, we blew out the candle for 2025 shouting "Good bye 2025!" and lit the candle for 2026. The support group members listed their prayer requests and Bishop led us is prayer for the requests for the New Year. Then the celebrations began, songs, dances and of course cakes for everyone!
One theme that came coming up throughout the morning was "The Family Africa is our familiy, this is our home!"

Here is a brief summary of what Bishop (his first name not his title ) Dube had to say;
"I started attending The Family Africa in 2017. I had started taking ARV medication and I wanted a place to call home. After I lost my job, my wife divorced me . I was very depressed and attended several counselling sessions to try to get back to a healthy mind state, After many failures in counselling I was referred to The Family Africa Centre. I met Pastor Honest (our resident spiritual counsellor at the time who is now running our Bible school in Malawi). Pastor Honest helped me to continue on my religious path which helped a lot.
In 2025 I had an eye problem and could barely see. I want to show appreciation to Mat and Joy ( two of our hard working board members) who took me to appointments and arranged for me to have an eye operation which should have cost R60,000. The operation was successful - I can see clearly now and I did not have to pay anything.
The Family Africa has the power to change your life and give you hope if you believe and never give up! "
Bishop is now a very active member of the community, the head of the Men's Forum for Diepsloot and involved in helping teenagers on drugs.
