Iranti welcomes its new Executive Director, Akani Shimange! Akani joins Iranti as the world celebrated the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) a few days ago and as LBQTI people’s rights on the continent are under increased attack. The need for organisations like Iranti to document, engage and resist stigma, violence and discrimination has never been sharper. https://www.iranti.org.za/iranti-welcomes-akani-shimange-as-the-organisations-new-executive-director/

Uganda's Parliament have passed a bill called "Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026" this week. The Bill targets foreign funding for local NGOs and individuals and is set to limit freedom of speech and assembly and impose far-reaching restrictions on NGO's and anyone defined as an "agent of a foreigner". Critics, including human rights groups, warn that it targets political dissent, civil society, and activists. Activists have said they will challenge the law if it is signed into law by the President.

A bill before Uganda ’s Parliament that proposes sweeping controls over “foreign funding” and political activity threatens fundamental rights and could be used to shut down civil society.

Botswana has taken the final administrative step to remove sections from its penal code that criminalised homos*xuality. The move was the result of a landmark 2019 High Court decision confirmed by the Court of Appeal in 2021, which effectively declared these laws unconstitutional. The Botswana Constitutional Court must now consider marriage equality. "We remain hopeful that Botswana will continue to uphold the constitutional values of equality, dignity, and justice for all," says LEGABIBO
