A message to the youth from our WDB Trust Desk.

You are not just inheriting South Africa’s future — you are actively redesigning it. Every skill learned, every business started, every community uplifted, and every barrier challenged becomes part of a new story for generations to come. At WDB Trust, we are inspired by young people who choose progress over limitation and purpose over passivity. The change you want, is in your hands.

Meet Zakhona Radebe

Zakhona lives with her four children, and for a long time, the household faced significant financial challenges as she was unemployed. The family relied on three Child Support Grants, which were not enough to meet their basic needs. They often ran out of food before receiving their next income due to limited budgeting skills. The family also faced challenges with access to clean drinking water, relying on a nearby stream, and lacked a vegetable garden to support sustainable nutrition. Over time, Zakhona became socially withdrawn and lost hope due to prolonged unemployment.

Through WDB Trust support, Zakhona received holistic psychosocial support, helping her regain confidence and re-engage with her community. She was educated on water purification methods, and local water challenges were raised through ward meetings. She was also encouraged to attend community gatherings, where she learned about a school construction project and secured employment.

Today, Zakhona is employed and has gained financial literacy skills, including budgeting and saving. She has improved her household’s financial stability, no longer runs out of food, and has been able to build a safer home and purchase essential furniture. WDB Trust continues to support and encourage her to start a vegetable garden for sustainable access to nutritious food.

This Africa Day, we celebrate a continent rich in resilience, innovation, and opportunity. As we reflect on this year’s African Union theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” we recognise the vital role women play in building sustainable communities across Africa.

For 35 years, WDB Trust has supported women in strengthening households, growing local economies, and creating lasting change. Access to resources, knowledge, and opportunity remains essential in empowering women to lead sustainable development within their communities.

We celebrate African women as drivers of progress, shaping resilient communities and contributing to a more united and sustainable Africa.
