From Soweto to Khayelitsha, this is what National Youth Service in action looks like—making a real, tangible difference in pre-schools and ECD centres across South Africa! 🇿🇦✨

City Year South Africa's Service Leaders step into classrooms weekly to provide essential, holistic support. From play-based literacy to social-emotional care, they ensure young children receive the attention and foundational development needed to succeed in school and beyond.

Through dedicated youth service, we are changing communities—one city at a time. 💛🙌

This , our Service Leaders took on Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s “You'll See It When You Believe It”—guessing the story behind the spine to show how every title holds a lesson waiting to unlock new perspectives. Reading isn't just about turning pages; it’s about stretching our minds and changing how we see the world. 💡

Watch them decipher the title, and let us know in the comments: what’s one book that completely changed your perspective? 👇

Spreading love, inspiration, and appreciation! 💚 Our Service Leaders showed up in their YearBeyond green t-shirts to honour women in the community as part of a special activation, led by our very own YearBeyond Mentor Academy Student, Kurhula Ndhlovu and supported by our entire staff team and what amazing they hosted.

The day was filled with a vibrant community march to spread love and share a small token of appreciation to the women in the community who carry so much each day. The activation reminded them that they matter and are deeply valued!

Well done to Kurhula for hosting her very first activation! Thank you for leading by example and spreading positive change. ✨

With youth unemployment remNational Youth Development Agency urgent challenges—Stats SA’s Q2 survey places youth unemployment at 47.4%, representing over 5 million young people—National Youth Service (NYS) continues to be an important pillar of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention, creating pathways for young people to serve, learn, gain experience and build towards their futures.

City Year South Africa was proud to participate in the NYS Implementing Partner Knowledge Exchange Workshop, as part of the YearBeyond Programme Implementing Partner network under the YearBeyond Institute.

Jacqui Boulle, Director of YearBeyond, shared a powerful presentation on the Pathway Progression approach. A key principle across YearBeyond is that young people should have three plans for their future, not just one. With the realities of youth unemployment, we need multiple pathways and options.

Throughout their service journey, YeBoneers are supported to develop plans across employment, education and entrepreneurship, preparing for their transition well before their year of service ends. With more than 3,683young people who served across the YearBeyond network, 71% of the graduating cohort successfully transitioned into their next opportunities.

It was also a proud full-circle moment to see our very own City Year alum, Sentle Sefatse, who served in 2008, now contributing to national solutions to youth unemployment through his work at Harambee working on the SAYouth.mobi. Platform to assist with large scale recruitment. Seeing someone who once wore the City Year red jacket now helping to strengthen systems and opportunities for the next generation is a powerful reminder of the long-term impact of youth service.

We are proud to stand alongside a growing network of organisations that believe in the power of NYS and its impact on young people and communities.

Together, we will continue to learn, collaborate and strengthen the movement in .

"If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl... but whatever you do, keep moving forward." 🏃🏾‍♀️💨

YeBoneer Service Leader, Refilwe Ratshefola, recently picked up World’s Greatest Speeches, and one speaker left an indelible mark: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (MLK Jr.).

For Refilwe, MLK Jr. became an unexpected mentor through his words, that have taught her that progress isn't about how fast you move, but that you never stop moving. His message on perseverance reminds us that no matter how tough the path or how small the step, keep moving. 🔴✨

On August 9, 1956, over 20,000 brave women marched to the Union Buildings, proving that active citizenship can rewrite history. Today, we honour their courage—not just with words, but through action.

As City Year South Africa we always remember that we stand on the shoulders of giants. We carry their legacy into classrooms and communities daily, leading with service, driving equality, and showing that responsible citizenship and service to others starts with us.

To every woman shaping the future of our nation: Happy Women’s Day! ❤️✨
