FEDUSA WELCOMES AGREEMENT TO PREVENT TONGAAT HULETT LIQUIDATION
18 June 2026

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) welcomes the confirmation by its affiliate, UASA, regarding developments from Tongaat Hulettโ€™s business rescue practitioners (BRPs) that a binding agreement has been reached which could prevent the sugar producer from going into liquidation.

UASA, which organises at the entity, reported that, according to Tongaat Hulett's BRPs, the agreement was concluded between the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) and the Vision Group of Companies. This agreement provides a path forward to sustain Tongaatโ€™s business rescue process, maintain trading operations, and support the implementation of the approved business rescue plan.

Tongaat Hulett, which was placed under provisional liquidation earlier this year, has been a pillar of the sugar industry in KwaZulu-Natal for more than 134 years. Nearly 250,000 jobs were at stake had liquidation taken place. The company will continue to play an important role not only in sugar production but also in supporting livelihoods, small businesses, and broader value chains linked to the sector.

FEDUSA will continue to engage with UASA on any developments related to the agreement. We trust that the parties involved will prioritise operational stability, job retention, investment, and the long-term sustainability of the sugar sector.

FEDUSA CALLS FOR LABOUR LAW COMPLIANCE FOLLOWING DEATH OF CARTRACK EMPLOYEE

10 June 2026

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) has noted with shock and sadness reports surrounding the death of Cartrack employee, Gcina Dhladhla, who suffered a medical emergency while on duty at the companyโ€™s Rosebank offices on Saturday. The tragic incident has raised serious concerns regarding conditions of work, employee wellbeing, and compliance with labour legislation in South African workplaces.

FEDUSA extends its deepest condolences to Ms Dhladhlaโ€™s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. We trust that the relevant investigations will establish the full facts and circumstances surrounding her death.

This tragedy serves as a reminder that every employer has a legal and moral obligation to protect the health, safety and dignity of workers. FEDUSA reminds employers and employees alike that the Basic Conditions of Employment Act provides for paid sick leave and sets out clear obligations regarding its administration. Workers must be able to exercise these rights without fear, intimidation or undue pressure.

FEDUSA further cautions employers that failure to comply with labour legislation and basic working conditions constitutes a serious violation of workersโ€™ rights. Employers found to be undermining labour laws must be held accountable through the appropriate legal and regulatory mechanisms.

FEDUSA BACKS NTEU LEGAL ACTION AGAINST UFH VICE-CHANCELLOR AMID SERIOUS GOVERNANCE ALLEGATIONS
10 JUNE 2026

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) fully supports its affiliate, the NTEU: National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), in formally lodging a criminal complaint against the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare (UFH).

The complaint has been lodged with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS), and the Public Protector (PP) regarding what NTEU describes as a profound collapse of governance, accountability and institutional oversight at the University of Fort Hare, allegedly linked directly to the actions of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu.

FEDUSA, together with NTEU, has previously raised concerns regarding ongoing governance and administrative scandals at the University of Fort Hare under the leadership of Professor Sakhela Buhlungu since he assumed office on 1 February 2017.

The complaint lodged by NTEU sets out allegations of sustained governance failures, abuse of authority and possible criminal conduct within the highest office of the institution. It further details the appointment and promotion of individuals outside lawful recruitment processes, the circumvention of governance structures, and the approval of substantial financial settlements amounting to millions of rands, as well as remuneration adjustments allegedly made without proper justification. In addition, the complaint alleges that Professor Sakhela Buhlungu selectively applied disciplinary processes to protect allies while targeting whistleblowers.

NTEU further alleges that, for years, workers at the university have endured intimidation and victimisation for raising concerns about governance and administration at the institution. FEDUSA trusts that the law will take its course and that justice will be served in the interests of the public, students and workers. FEDUSA reiterates that public trust in the University must be rebuilt and safeguarded, with transparency, accountability and good governance restored as foundational principles of the institution.
