From a quiet Grade 10 learner who sat at the back of the class to a Grade 12 learner who speaks, shares ideas and takes responsibility, Luphelo Manqana’s story is one of growing courage. At Vulumzi Secondary School, Columba Leadership helped Luphelo understand that leadership is not about power, but responsibility and service. Luphelo began volunteering for speeches, joining school projects, encouraging classmates before tests and helping Grade 8 and 9 learners with mathematics. “I am not the same person I was in Grade 10. I am better and braver.” Luphelo’s journey reminds us that leadership is influence, not a title.

As South Africa enters Women’s Month, we honour the women and girls who lead with courage, care and conviction in schools, workplaces and communities. At Columba Leadership, we believe leadership is strengthened when young women are supported to know themselves, use their voices and contribute to positive change. Throughout August, we will share stories of women and trustees whose leadership reflects service, resilience and purposeful action.

We are honoured to share a special act of generosity from Ian Chisholm, the first CEO of Columba 1400.
Ian has just published a new book, Quiet Champions: A Way Forward for Mentors in Turbulent Times, a powerful reflection on mentorship, leadership, and the quiet, steady influence that shapes young lives.

“Mentorship is not something you do to someone. It is something you are to them.” — Ian Chisholm
Ian has committed all profits from book and audiobook sales in Africa to supporting Columba Leadership’s work with young people and educators across South Africa. This is leadership and generosity in action.
Thank you, Ian. Your contribution will help us continue building leaders who change futures.

67 minutes.
A lifetime of service.

Nelson Mandela International Day calls on each of us
to serve, reflect, and contribute to the communities
around us. The spirit of 67 minutes of service reminds
us that meaningful change begins with action, no
matter how small. At Columba Leadership, service is
one of our six core values and a daily practice of
leadership.

World Youth Skills Day highlights the importance of
preparing young people with the skills, values, and
confidence they need for the future. At Columba
Leadership, we focus on values-driven leadership
that helps learners make thoughtful decisions, work
with others, and take positive action. Skills matter,
and so does the character behind how those skills
are used.

Learners from 3 West Coast schools recently visited the Hopefield Wind Farm, owned by Umoya Energy, where they were hosted by Umoya Energy’s Technical and Social Performance interns.
The visit gave learners an opportunity to engage with a real-world renewable energy environment, learn more about wind energy, and explore future possibilities beyond the classroom.
They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the chance to see learning come to life.
