Women’s Month | Bodies with/without borders

Gender-based violence and xenophobic violence cannot be understood in isolation. Both are sustained by systems of inequality, exclusion, dehumanisation and unequal power, with profound consequences for women, children and marginalised communities.

In this Women’s Month opinion piece, Dr Angeline Stephens, Chair of PsySSA’s Sexuality and Gender Division, invites us to consider the connections between gender-based violence, xenophobia and the structural conditions that determine whose dignity, safety and belonging are protected.

Drawing on Ubuntu, feminist leadership and positive masculinities, the article calls for collective care, shared responsibility and structural accountability, while reflecting on the role psychology professionals can play in recognising and disrupting the power dynamics that sustain violence.

As PsySSA, we affirm that dignity and humanity cannot be conditional on gender, sexuality, nationality, citizenship or belonging.

Violence is violence, no matter the form. It must stop.
