As we commemorate the heroic uprising of June 16, 1976, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of young people who confronted an unjust system and demanded a future founded on dignity, equality, and freedom. Their struggle teaches us that young people are not spectators in historyโ€”they are makers of history.

Today, the Young Urban Women Movement declares that our place is in the revolution. The struggle for social and economic justice remains incomplete as young women continue to face unemployment, poverty, gender-based violence, and the burden of unpaid care work.

The care economy remains one of the most overlooked pillars of our society. Every day, women and girls care for children, the elderly, the sick, and people living with disabilities. This labour sustains families, communities, and the economy, yet it is often unpaid, underpaid, and unrecognized. A revolutionary society must place care at the centre of development and ensure that care workers enjoy decent work, fair wages, social protection, and respect.

Our place in the revolution means fighting for municipalities that invest in childcare facilities, community health services, safe public spaces, water, sanitation, electricity, and social infrastructure that eases the burden carried by women. It means demanding that public resources serve communities rather than private profit.

As young women, our place is also in the democratic processes that shape our future. Elections are a critical site of struggle. We must register, vote, organize, and hold elected representatives accountable. We refuse to be treated merely as voters; we are leaders, activists, organizers, and agents of change.

The spirit of June 16 calls upon us to build a society based on solidarity, equality, and collective care. We therefore reaffirm that young urban women are not on the sidelines of transformation.

Our place is in the revolution.
Our place is in leadership.
Our place is in building a caring and just society.

Forward to the Care Economy!
Forward to Women's Leadership!
Forward to Youth Power!
Forward to People's Democracy!

Fifty years on, the legacy of the Soweto Uprising lives and breathes at the community level.

At ActionAid South Africa, we believe that commemorating this milestone requires more than looking backward. It requires an honest assessment of our present.

While we celebrate the hard-won victories for freedom and justice, we must confront the reality that deep-seated socio-economic inequalities persist. True honour to the Class of 1976 demands systemic transformation and rigorous policy-level change.

The fire ignited in 1976 burns on through accountability and civic action. Across the country, the ActionAid South Africa network is powered by grassroots leaders, advocates, and doers who confront these systemic challenges daily.

We are not just remembering history; we are actively working to reshape the future of governance and eco-social justice in South Africa.

Happening Now | Community Imbizo on Critical Minerals and a Fair Energy Future

The Mokopane community Imbizo is officially underway! Mokopane is currently surrounded by intensive mining for platinum group metals and critical minerals. While these resources are in high demand for the global energy transition, local mining-affected communities continue to bear the environmental and social costs.

This community-led Imbizo is changing the narrative by providing a vital space for dialogue and storytelling. We are here to amplify the voices of young people, address local mining impacts, and demand a just transition that puts people before profits.

Today, ActionAid South Africa joins the world in marking World Environment Day ๐ŸŒ

Climate change is not a future problem โ€” many communities, especially those living near mining areas, are already feeling its effects through water shortages, extreme weather, pollution, and threats to their livelihoods.

As South Africa moves towards cleaner energy, we must make sure that no one is left behind.

A Just Transition means creating a future that is not only greener, but also fairer for workers, communities, women, and young people.

We call on decision-makers to:
โœ… Include communities in decisions that affect their lives
โœ… Protect jobs and create decent livelihood opportunities
โœ… Invest in water, food security, and quality public services
โœ… Hold companies accountable for environmental and social impacts
โœ… Ensure communities benefit fairly from energy and mining projects
