IAIAsa A professional association that leads Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) in Africa

19/06/2026

One of the strongest messages to emerge from IAIA26 is that impact assessment is becoming a profession of judgement, not just process.

The profession is moving:
• from compliance to governance
• from consultation to collaboration
• from project-level thinking to systems thinking
• from isolated projects to cumulative effects
• from technical communication to trust-building

Technical rigor remains essential, but the future value of impact assessment lies in helping society navigate complexity, uncertainty, and difficult decisions.

Held during World Environment Month, this session tackles the industry-specific pressures that lead to burnout. We will examine the concept of "hero culture" in environmental work and its unsustainability. The session also introduces the "dopamine debate" - the impact of constant digital stimulation on our motivation, focus, and ability to find satisfaction in deep, meaningful work. The goal is to move beyond surface-level resilience tips to understand the systemic and neurological factors at play.

Youth Day honours the courage of the 1976 Soweto Uprising and the young people who stood up for justice, dignity, and a better future. Their bravery reminds us that the voices of youth have the power to challenge injustice and shape history.

Today, we recommit to supporting and empowering young people - not only as leaders of tomorrow, but as changemakers today.
