The skills that engineers and scientist have are valuable and we can, through working together, use them to benefit our communities every day of year, not just on Mandela day. The College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) is launching the ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS-UNISA (EWB-UNISA) branch on the Mandela day 18 July 2013. The aim of this group is to
*Engage and support voluntary comm
unity projects.
*Use our knowledge and training to benefit our local communities. This group is a platform for discussion between the CSET students of UNISA so that we can:
*identify problems facing our community that we as students can help solve,
*share innovative ideas that can benefit our communities,
*work together to find solutions to everyday problems facing the poorest of our country. EWB is an international organisation and in South Africa there are branches of EWB at Wits and Cape Town Universities too. You can look on their web pages to see the kinds of projects that they have tackled. Examples of projects that which Wits have done is building a biogas digester for a school at Diepsloot to provide electricity, setting up and running web pages for NGO’s and building a foot bridge for a community divided by a river so that children could cross safely to go to school. University of Cape Town also established a fixed doom bio digester and they used a modified phone application to measure methane concentration and pH. This will be a great opportunity to problem solve and communicate effectively with every UNISA student in Africa and work together to the benefit of our local communities. This group is targeted at students in engineering, science and technology who would like to make a difference in their communities and country. Please join our page EWB-UNISA and join the discussion or email us on [email protected]. Please give us your thoughts on this idea, add your ideas of useful projects for us to look at and let us make a difference!
