Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi was in Soweto over the past weekend to raise awareness about gender-based violence and femicide. She highlighted the Teddy Bear Foundation's call for urgent action and greater accountability, warning that delays and failures leave women and children vulnerable.

Dr Shaheda Omar delivered a presentation at the Koleinu "Protecting Childhood Virtual Summit" on 18 October 2026, where leading local and international experts explored how to better prevent child s*xual abuse and create safer environments for children.

TBF showcased the Court Preparation programme together with Janet Pavey from TOP Dogs - Therapy Dogs , who have been providing free support service to child abuse victims who require therapy dogs during the legal process.

Designed for professionals, parents and caregivers, educators, mental health practitioners, social workers and community and faith leaders, the summit offers practical insights into prevention, online safety, survivor support, trauma, safeguarding and responding to abuse.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi joined Soweto community members in the Freedom March Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide on Saturday 18 October 2026. The march called for an end to violence and promoted safer communities for all.

The Imbizo forms part of Minister Kubayi’s integrated campaign to strengthen prevention and response efforts. It follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for a coordinated government and society response to gender-based violence and femicide.

Stakeholders including the Teddy Bear Foundation took part, with Dr Shaheda Omar providing a message of support to the audience.

As the conversation continues, the focus remains on prevention, support for those affected and stronger systems that protect women, children and vulnerable people. Minister Kubayi’s participation alongside Soweto residents underlined that the fight against gender-based violence and femicide requires action from both government and communities.

A CAMPAIGN to publicly expose convicted s*xual offenders has reignited a debate over whether South Africans should have access to the National Register of S*x Offenders (NRSO). Dr Shaeeda Omar, director of the Teddy Bear Foundation, said she supported making verified information about convicted s*xual offenders more accessible, particularly where it could prevent further harm to children.

Saturday, 17 October 2026 -- The South African Department of Justice hosted a Gender Based Violence and Femicide Imbizo in Phiri, Soweto. Dr Shaheda Omar from TTBC gave a message of Support. The Minister of Justice and Chairperson of National Council of Provinces led the event.

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, will host a Community Imbizo on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) with the Soweto community on Saturday, 17 October 2026 at Phiri Sports Ground in Soweto.

Key stakeholders, including the Teddy Bear Foundation, will participate in support of the initiative. The event will feature exhibition stands by various stakeholders, providing residents with information on available services.
