SALUTE THE ANCESTORS
IN YOU

IN THAT DAWN
MANY DECADES
AGO
KNOWN ONLY
TO
THEM

THE
ANCESTORS
CHOSE
YOU

AND
YOU
BECAME

MATTERA

IN
YOU
THEY
MANIFESTED
THE
SPIRIT
THAT
MET
D’ALMEIDA

AND ALL
THE
REST
AND
NEVER
FLINCHED

YOU
WERE
NOT
MEANT TO BE
CAPTURED

AND

THAT SPIRIT
ROAMED
EMBODIED
IN
YOU

TOUCHING
BLESSING
LIFTING
TEACHING
GUIDING
AND
AWAKENING

PREPARING

FOR
THAT
FREEDOM

THAT
IS
ON
ITS
WAY

RETURNING

RETURN
THE
LAND

RESTORE
THE
LAND

HEAL
THIS
LAND

YOU WERE
NEVER
MEANT
TO BE
CAPTURED

MATTERA

SPIRIT
OF
THE
ANCESTORS

Another Lifetime Achievement for Don Mattera

NACA 2026 Posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award: Dr Donato Francesco Mattera

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, led by Minister Gayton McKenzie, rolled out the red carpet at the Sun City Super Bowl on Friday night, 21 August 2026, celebrating South Africa’s biggest creative stars at the National Arts and Culture Awards (NACA).

A Posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon the late poet, author, and Bard of the liberation struggle, Dr Donato Francesco Mattera, affectionately known as Don Mattera, under the Minister’s Awards category. This honour recognised Don’s profound contribution to nation building, literature, and social cohesion — a segment reserved exclusively for South Africa’s most influential cultural icons.

Mattera received this distinguished recognition alongside musical legends Miriam Makeba and Mandoza. The 2026 NACA ceremony celebrated excellence across literature, heritage, visual arts, design, film, and the performing arts under the theme “Celebrating Our Nation’s Creative Excellence.”

In a significant shift, the awards also introduced financial support for recipients, ending what Minister McKenzie described as years of artists being acknowledged with “just a certificate.”
