We address the educational gap among disadvantaged learners as well as enhancing content knowledge through reinforcing work done by educators in classrooms.

Phakamani Young Minds Academy is a non profit organization formed in 2014 providing academic support to school learners from their earliest grade of school up to their final years of secondary school career. Established in 2014, Phakamani Young Minds Academy is a youth-led non-profit organization providing academic assistance, support and mentorship to learners throughout their schooling career – from their foundation phase up to their final years of secondary schooling. Our ultimate goal as an organisation through our services is to produce prominent members of the society and young people lifting themselves out of the cycle of poverty and into tertiary education and/or employment.

EASTERN CAPE, WE ARE HERE!

PYMA is expanding its reach, strengthening the afterschool work and building the capacity of young people to deliver quality learning experiences for children.

Our team has just completed a 3-day workshop equipping youth to run structured, well-managed afterschool programmes through practical training, coaching and mentorship.

Afterschool is not an extension of the school day. It is a critical part of the education ecosystem, with the power to shape futures, unlock potential and create opportunities for our children.

We are taking this work further, one province at a time, because every child deserves access to quality learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Our work in matric support reminds us that preparation takes more than textbooks. It takes consistent academic support, encouragement and people who help learners see possibilities beyond school. Through our programme, we support learners to strengthen their understanding, build confidence and prepare for their next steps.

When we invest in young people, the impact reaches far beyond.

Gcobisa Ntwanabi faced doubts about her ability to care for children. She kept going and created employment opportunities for other young people while serving her community.

Her story asks us to see the full value of public employment programmes: income, dignity, skills and opportunities that grow beyond the person first employed.

Today at PYMA, we’re screening Youth Capital powerful documentary, The Value We Don’t Count, to bring these stories into the conversation.

As we debate public spending, young people’s voices and contributions must help shape the decisions.

Public Employment Programmes deserves sustained investment - because the value young people create deserves to count.

We're expanding to Limpopo! 💙

This week we wrapped up three days of in-person training with young people who are ready to build and run afterschool programmes in their own communities.

They brought energy, ideas and a clear commitment to the children around them. We brought the tools, the training and long-term support.

Through this expansion, we are investing in local youth leadership. We're equipping young people with the skills, confidence and support to create safe, engaging spaces where children can learn and grow.

For us, digital inclusion goes beyond connectivity. It is about ensuring that young people and communities can access, understand, use and benefit from digital opportunities.

The Department of Basic Education’s literacy agenda recognises the importance of building literacy foundations in the early years, including emergent literacy and the use of home languages to support children’s transition into formal schooling.

This is why early learning matters.

Our work connects early learning, literacy and youth development. Through Public Employment Programmes, we have supported and placed over 500 young people in literacy-related programmes, reaching more than 8 000 children.

Early learning is where the foundation is laid. Literacy is where that foundation becomes a pathway to opportunity.

On , we reaffirm our commitment to working with communities, practitioners and young people to strengthen the foundations of learning and contribute to South Africa’s goal of ensuring that children can read for meaning.
