When courage becomes bigger than the fear of being misunderstood.
Many people know Marcia Cross as Bree Van de Kamp from the television series Desperate Housewives. But beyond the character millions came to know and love is a woman who has faced a deeply personal health battle and chosen to speak about it publicly.
Cross was diagnosed with a**l cancer in 2017. Following treatment, she shared her experience with the public and helped bring attention to a condition that many people are too embarrassed to discuss.
Her story reminds us of something important: our health should never become a source of shame.
There are conversations we avoid because they feel uncomfortable. There are symptoms we ignore because we are afraid of what they might mean. And sometimes, the very thing we are afraid to talk about is the conversation someone else needs to hear.
Women, please take your health seriously. Seek medical advice when something concerns you. Attend recommended screenings and do not allow embarrassment to keep you from asking questions.
And to every woman who has walked through a difficult season and found the courage to speak about it, your voice may become the encouragement someone else needs.
