Last month we gathered at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways to celebrate our newest graduates, and our hearts are still full.

To our graduates: we are so proud of you. Being part of your journey through your studies has been a real privilege, and watching you cross that stage was a moment the whole Tiso family will remember. You put in the work, you showed up, and you did it.

A big thank you to our alumni, staff, trustees and friends of the Foundation who joined us to celebrate. Days like this are a reminder of what we build together.

Parents, teachers, aunties, uncles: please share this one.

We receive over 4 000 bursary applications every year, and every year we have to set aside applications from young people we really wanted to fund. Not because they were not good enough. Because a section was left blank, or a 200-word essay was answered in one sentence, or the form belonged to a completely different organisation.

These are fixable things. Nobody had just told them.

So we wrote a guide. It covers the five mistakes we see most often, and a lot of practical advice besides: checking that you actually qualify before you spend hours on a form, getting your certified copies right, asking for references early, applying to more than one bursary including NSFAS, checking that your institution is properly accredited, and knowing that a real bursary provider will never ask you to pay an application fee.

One tip we would underline: before you apply anywhere, go and read that organisation's website. Learn what they do and why. It genuinely shows in an application, and it makes a difference.
