YLED Programme – Youth

Leadership & Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YLED) is an aspiration youth development initiative that gives selected in-school learners the opportunity to have their leadership, interpersonal and entrepreneurship skills honed through 4 different skills models, namely Life Skills, Entrepreneurship Skills, and Leadership Skills over a 28 Saturdays period. By acquiring these skills, young people will play a full role in society and economy.

• Life Skills for Success – imparting life skills that will seek to build a good foundation for self development and success in life. Improving critical thinking, confidence levels and effective
problem solving capabilities amongst the youth. Producing young people that demonstrate the
ability to articulate personal values and a sense of responsibility to self and others.

• Leadership Skills - Themed youth leadership development initiative, aimed at unearthing and developing future leaders by promoting youth leadership development experiences that encourage group participation as well as collaboration with other individuals and groups.

• Career Development – Provides the learners with the necessary guidelines that will facilitate awareness with regards to their intended fields of study. Implemented in a form of skills sessions and a

Career Day – my career journey as it applies today and the associated lessons.

• Young Women Dialogue – ‘Young Women in Dialogue’ is a women’s development programme that is designed to provide a platform for thorough, informed dialogue between young female students and young female professionals on the challenges faced by young women in modern day South Africa and ways in which young women can navigate these challenges. This programme is aimed at inspiring young women to look beyond their
challenges and make a positive change to their lives and their communities and provide them
with the tools to do so.

• Entrepreneurship Challenge – With the right skills and support to set up their own business, young people will have the opportunity to provide for themselves, their families and support growth of the wider economy. Through the Programme, YLED Educates the learners of business skills in order to develop an understanding of business organisations and provide them with real and practical experience in running small businesses of their own – thus
creating Entrepreneurial awareness.

• Financial Literacy programme – With the right financial skills, disadvantaged young people will know how to manage their finances effectively, avoiding debt and have the confidence and knowledge to create a stable financial platform.

• Motivational Talk – Young and some seasoned professionals that can relate to the challenges that young people face at this stage of their lives, are available to give the future leaders reasons to believe. They come from diverse backgrounds and have overcame adversity to achieve success in their respective fields and have the ability to inspire, teach and energize young people. Furthermore YLEDers share their life journeys with the aim to inspire and motivate.

Youth Day reminds us that meaningful change has always been driven by people who refused to accept the status quo.

Today, honouring that legacy means creating opportunities, challenging inequality, investing in young people, and ensuring that every young person has the chance to thrive.

At Yled, we believe that the youth needs to be nurtured and developed so that they can find their own voice.

Commemoration is important, but our greatest tribute is what we choose to do after today.

Happy Youth Day, South Africa. 🇿🇦

Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room. 🤏🏾

This week at NTT Data, we’re exploring the power of Personal Branding with Busisiwe Mkhize.

In a world where opportunities often find those who stand out, understanding your strengths, values, and unique story is essential. The learners will learn how to intentionally build a personal brand that reflects who they are, what they stand for, and the impact they want to make.

Because your name is more than an identity, it’s your reputation, your story, and your future.

Leadership is not about a title. It is about the impact you make, the problems you choose to solve, and the example you set for others.

The learners explored what it truly means to lead during a thought-provoking session facilitated by Thabo Serame. From understanding that leaders are readers and readers are leaders to recognising that leadership does not wait for permission, learners were challenged to rethink how they show up in their schools, communities, and everyday lives.

One question stayed with us long after the session ended:
✨ How can I leave a room better than I found it?

Because leadership is not something we step into one day. It is something we practise every day.

Leadership is not just about leading others. It starts with leading yourself. Through this engaging session, learners will explore the qualities of effective leaders, build confidence in their decision-making, strengthen their communication skills, and discover how they can create positive change in the spaces around them.

We’re looking forward to seeing learners step up, find their voice, and embrace the leader within.

The entrepreneurial journey officially begins ✨

This week’s Introduction to Entrepreneurship session, facilitated by Dr Zwane, set the foundation for the YEC phase of the programme. Learners explored what entrepreneurship truly means through conversations around opportunity, innovation, problem-solving, and business thinking.

The session was further enriched by entrepreneurs who shared their personal journeys, lessons, and experiences, giving learners real insight into the realities of entrepreneurship. The cohort also learnt more about the YLED journey and how the programme came about, highlighting the importance of social entrepreneurship and using business as a tool to create meaningful impact in communities.

A powerful start to a journey of building future entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers
