This week in Kenya, the ACRP Nairobi Hub brought grassroots groups, youth leaders, and civil society directly face-to-face with AGN negotiators and experts for the AGN Roundtable and Climate Baraza. Inspired by traditional community barazas, this gathering created space for frontline voices to articulate the challenges they live with every day, from climate finance that remains out of reach to severe floods and droughts that leave families without support.

Crucially, the convening saw the launch of the Grassroots Evidence Survey Outcomes (by G.A.M.A. and ACA)—shifting discussions toward community-led adaptation. Across sessions on Loss & Damage and a Just Transition, frontline leaders made it clear that climate finance is a matter of rights and accountability, not charity, and called for direct community benefit-sharing in energy and development projects.

Instead of passive discussion, communities presented clear, actionable asks directly to those shaping the continent’s official voice. This lived evidence will directly inform the Joint Continental Policy Brief ahead of COP31 and COP32, ensuring local reality drives continental strategy.

Earth overshoot days across Africa – Ghana edition 🇬🇦

Ghana’s Earth Overshoot Day lands on 25 September 2026. If the entire world lived like the average Ghanaian, we would require 1.4X Earths to sustain global resource consumption. Rapid, asphalt-heavy urban development is intensifying dangerous urban heat-island effects across municipal areas, leaving vulnerable urban populations exposed to skyrocketing temperatures. 🏙️🔥

Relying on unplanned, non-resilient urban expansion puts long-term public health and local climate security at severe risk.

True climate justice requires moving beyond localised planting initiatives to demand structural municipal reform. Lightening the load means organising at the civic level to mandate green cooling spaces in paved municipal areas and legislate urban forestry policies. Demanding climate-resilient urban zoning regulations is how we protect communities from rising thermal extremes and move the date.

Gabon 🇬🇦 Earth Overshoot Day is 18 September 2026. If the entire world lived like the average person in Gabon, humanity would require 1.4X Earths to sustain global resource consumption. While Gabon holds vital segments of the Congo Basin carbon sink, its economic baseline remains heavily tethered to crude oil extraction, driving localised environmental degradation and global climate emissions.

Relying on a fossil-fuel-dependent economy puts our long-term continental climate security at risk.

True climate justice means moving beyond personal lifestyle adjustments to demand structural economic shifts. Lightening the load requires organising at the civic level to resist expanding petrochemical plastic markets and advocate for zero-waste community frameworks.

Demanding a just transition away from oil extraction is how we dismantle fossil fuel dominance and move the date.

A major victory for climate justice and indigenous rights on South Africa’s Wild Coast! 🌊✊🏽

When Shell proposed seismic blasting along 6,000 km² of pristine coastline, local fishers, traditional leaders, and civil society stood up to defend their heritage, marine life, and livelihoods. After a grueling multi-year legal battle, the courts have officially blocked Shell, reaffirming that corporate profits will never override community consent and procedural justice.

This win belongs to the people of the Wild Coast, Sustaining the Wild Coast, Natural Justice, Legal Resources Centre, Greenpeace Africa, and every activist who held the line. Together, we prove that organised civil society holds real power.
