Earth overshoot days across Africa – Today, on 16 August, Algeria reaches its own Earth overshoot day πŸ‡©πŸ‡Ώ

If the entire world lived like the average Algerian, we would require 1.6X Earths to sustain global resource consumption. As intense heatwaves multiply across the desert climate, a heavy systemic reliance on gas-powered air conditioning is driving up national emissions and trapping cities in a feedback loop of fossil fuel dependency.

This escalating demand for mechanical cooling highlights the urgent need to transition away from extractive energy frameworks.

True climate justice across North Africa means moving beyond individual adaptations to demand structural solutions. By advocating for climate-resilient urban planning, supporting policies for green infrastructure, and demanding clean energy alternatives to fossil-fuelled cooling, we can protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat. Let's push for systemic energy reform to move the date.

Climate change isn't just an environmental challenge - it is a compounding financial crisis for African nations 🌍.

When extreme droughts or floods strike, national budgets are forced to divert vital funds away from healthcare and education toward urgent infrastructure repairs.

The result? Rapidly escalating national debt.

The 2026 Africa Sustainable Development Report reveals that over 20 African countries are currently in or near severe debt distress. We cannot borrow our way out of a climate crisis. Africa needs grant-based adaptation finance and debt cancellation linked directly to climate resilience.

Did you know? Over 970 million people across Africa still rely on traditional biomass and polluting fuels for daily cooking.

Key findings from the 2026 Africa Sustainable Development Report highlight that household smoke causes 400,000 premature deaths every single year - a crisis that disproportionately affects women and children.

Transitioning to clean cooking solutions is not optional; it is essential for public health, gender equity and curbing deforestation across the continent.
