Look past the activity, can you see what is really happening here?
It may just look like a morning of fun, but these moments are actually a powerful partnership at work.
These are just some of the many activities that our Wits student, Carrie, has thoughtfully put together as a part of a broader program aimed to empower and educate our residents about self-care and mental health.
Nail painting reminds our ladies that feeling good about themselves is important, that their feelings matter and that they have the power to change negative emotions.
In this activity, they learn to recognise and name what they are feeling, and that spending time together doing fun things, can reduce loneliness and improve their mental health.
And in return, Carrie gets the opportunity to see her years of tertiary education put in to practice.
Carrie is a 3rd year Wits student who is completing her community service with us.
For many years, San Salvador Home has been committed to empowering and equipping the future generation of care workers, and has welcomed students like Carrie into our home.
Through the practical application of her studies, she is able to refine and develop her skills, and she gains valuable, real-life experience before she enters the working world.
So these moments that you see, are not insignificant, rather they show us that we all have something we can learn from each other!
*On a personal note, we want to thank Carrie, for all the time she has so lovingly given to our ladies. Her gentleness, compassion and determination are a testament to her character. We recognise how lucky we are to have women like her, of such high calibre and capability, entering into the care profession!
