We bid farewell to Ntate Barney Mokgatle, a fearless organiser of the 1976 generation, a comrade whose courage and conviction stood firm alongside Ntate Tsietsi Mashinini and countless others during the Soweto Uprising.

He was part of the quiet engine of ’76:, steady hands, sharp mind, and an unwavering commitment to Black dignity, justice, and liberation. His passing closes another chapter in a story written by those who dared to imagine freedom and fought to make it real.

Black Consciousness teaches us to honour the giants who walked before us. Ntate Barney Mokgatle was one of them.

Black Consciousness teaches us to love being Black.
And Ntate Molefe Pheto continues to make sure we never forgot it.

“My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom.”-Solomon Mahlangu, 6 April 1979

Today would’ve been Ntate Solomon Mahlangu’s 69th birthday.

He was only 22 when the apartheid government executed him.

A young MK soldier. A student. A freedom fighter.
He died for a country he believed could be free and fair.

Ntate is not just part of history books. He’s a reminder of what young people are capable of when they’re informed, conscious, and committed.

For today’s generation, students, workers, creatives, his story matters because it shows us that youth have always been central to real change. Knowing who he was helps us understand the power we still have now.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the launch of our June 16 Commercetion program! We began with a powerful, intergenerational conversation on June 16 Through Creativity and Enterprise, exploring how youth can honor the past while building bold, self-defined futures.

The event was hosted at Eyethu Heritage Hall, formerly the iconic Eyethu Cinema in Mofolo, Soweto, a fitting space to reflect on legacy, creativity, and enterprise as tools for change.

As we honour the youth of 1976, we must confront the uncomfortable truth: their bloodshed is slowly being buried beneath our complacency.

On Friday, we opened the June 16 Commemoration Program with a panel discussion on how to reimagine June 16. But before we reimagine, we must first reckon—with ourselves.

In 1976, thousands of Black students took to the streets to resist the Bantu Education system, a tool of apartheid designed to condition Black children for servitude. It enforced Afrikaans as a medium of instruction, aiming to suppress indigenous languages, history, and pride. On that day, young people chose courage over conformity, dignity over survival. Many paid with their lives.

Yet today, in a so-called liberated South Africa, we proudly trade our mother tongues for global accents and wear foreign culture as a badge of honour. We have become commentators of history, not carriers of its meaning.

The youth of ‘76 fought for a future. What have we done with it?

This June 16, Kidz of Biko doesn’t just remember, it demands reflection.

Join us this evening for a powerful gathering centered on consciousness and youth-led dialogue, as Kidz of Biko partners in this year’s June 16 Commemoration Program. Leading the way, we present “Sober Discussions” under the theme “Reimagine June 16”, a platform for deep, critical engagement on how the legacy of June 16 can inspire today’s youth to lead with creativity and entrepreneurship. The evening will include two dynamic panel sessions, followed by a live performance to officially open the program. Let’s Reimagine June 16 to shape our future, together.
