The Rare Finch Conservation Group (RFCG) was founded in 2005 by a group of established finch enthusiasts in South Africa and Australia. The RFCG members chose to thread their knowledge of finch husbandry skills into the more specialist area of finch conservation work both with finches in the wild and in captivity. With finches being an afterthought in many large-scale conservation projects, it see

The RFCG members all come from diverse career backgrounds, including publishing, advertising, teaching and writing. This brings to the RFCG a wide skill-set of knowledge and experience needed to nurture the aims and objectives of the organisation. It's first project, which was started in 2005, is the threatened and elusive Shelley's crimsonwing finch.Arguably Africa's most elusive bird.The world's first photograph of the finch was found in 2008. Our Story

The Rare Finch Conservation Group (RFCG) was founded in 2005 by a group of established finch enthusiasts in South Africa and Australia. The RFCG members chose to thread their knowledge of finch husbandry skills into the more specialist area of finch conservation work with finches in the wild. With finches being an afterthought in many large-scale conservation projects, it seemed apt that a specialist non-governmental organisation be setup to conserve the rarer finch species. The RFCG members all come from diverse career backgrounds, including publishing, advertising, teaching and writing. This brings to the RFCG a wide skill-set of knowledge and experience needed to nurture the aims and objectives of the organisation. The RFCG currently has two projects that it is working on. It's first project, which was started in 2005, is the threatened and elusive Shelley's crimsonwing finch. Arguably Africa's most elusive bird.The world's first photograph of the finch was found in 2008.Currently we now know of only seven photographs in the world. All of them are of male birds held in the hand.

The RFCG's second project, started in 2015, is a collaboration with BirdLife South Africa on the little Orange-breasted Waxbill.
