🇰🇪 KENYA CELEBRATED MASHUJAA DAY YESTERDAY: RUTO HONOURS FALLEN HEROES AND LAUNCHES ACHIENG' ONEKO BIOGRAPHY
By Voice of Africa News
Yesterday, Kenya celebrated Mashujaa Day with pomp and colour, honouring the extraordinary men and women whose courage and sacrifice gave birth to the republic.
In a video released by State House Kenya, President William Ruto led the nation yesterday in remembering Kenya's freedom struggle, from the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of the Kenyan flag in 1963 to the fireworks and celebrations witnessed across the country yesterday.
President Ruto paid tribute yesterday to heroes who paid the ultimate price for resisting colonial oppression:
- Koitalel Arap Samoei: The supreme spiritual and political leader of the Nandi people who led a fierce 12-year military resistance against British colonial expansion.
- Dedan Kimathi Waciuri: Leader of the Kenya Land and Freedom Army during the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s.
- Field-Marshal Muthoni Kirima: A fearless female fighter in Mau Mau's 1950s rebellion against British colonialism.
- Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and the Kapenguria Six: The President honoured yesterday Kenya's first President and his fellow Kapenguria Six who were arrested on October 20, 1952, when a state of emergency was declared, alongside thousands of patriots who suffered torture, detention, exile and death.
"Kenya hands raised the flag of freedom. We gather to honour the extraordinary men and women whose courage, sacrifice, and determination gave us the republic we proudly call home."
"Their struggle was not merely to replace one authority with another, but to secure for every Kenyan the freedom, dignity and right to determine their own destiny."
-The Price of Freedom Launched Yesterday
A key highlight of yesterday's Mashujaa Day was the launch of the biography "The Price of Freedom: Achieng' Oneko."
Ramogi Achieng' Oneko was a Kenyan freedom fighter, politician and national hero, and one of the Kapenguria Six. The book preserves his legacy and a defining chapter in Kenya's history.
The President was seen unveiling the book yesterday alongside dignitaries including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and other leaders, as crowds waved Kenyan flags in celebration.
President Ruto said yesterday that the freedom, democracy and rule of law Kenya enjoys today are fruits of the heroes' sacrifice.
"That is the enduring meaning of Mashujaa Day. The freedom we enjoy, the democracy we cherish, and the rule of law that guides our republic are fruits of their sacrifice."
Yesterday's celebrations featured military parades, air displays with helicopters carrying "Happy Mashujaa Day" banners, school children waving flags, and cultural performances.
