The concept of peer support isn't new, but it has proven to be invaluable in services to persons with disabailities. Who understands the road you're walking better than someone who has been down that path, and can give advice and guidance from their own experience?

Sunday's Leefwรชreld van die Gestremde on RSG at 11H00 investigates the impact of cerebral palsy on an individual, and pays specific attention to a newly established platform serving as a discussion group for individuals with cerebral palsy.

As South Africa works towards a more inclusive transport system, persons with hearing disabilities can experience barriers that are not always visible. Accessibility is not simply about being able to enter a station or board a vehicle.

Meaningful access also includes the ability to obtain information, communicate with staff, understand travel announcements, navigate changes and respond safely in an emergency. These challenges can occur across air, rail, road, taxi and public/e-transport systems, and can include -
โ€ข Planning a trip
โ€ข Purchasing a ticket
โ€ข Finding the correct platform, gate or vehicle
โ€ข Receiving boarding or departure information
โ€ข Understanding delays, cancellations or route changes
โ€ข Knowing when to disembark
โ€ข Communicating with drivers and frontline staff
โ€ข Asking for assistance
โ€ข Understanding emergency instructions

Watch out for our series of posts on making transport accessible for those who have hearing impairments!

๐Ÿ’™ DIGNITY SHOULD NEVER COME WITH A PRICE TAG.

For many, nappies are simply something you buy when you need them.
For a child or adult with a disability who experiences incontinence, they can be essential to everyday life.

And when a family is already carrying the costs that come with disability, the price of nappies can become overwhelming.

A packet can cost between R300 and R1,100.

That can mean difficult choices between nappies and other basic household needs.
But this is about more than a product.

It is about being able to leave home.

It is about participating in your community.

It is about feeling comfortable, safe, and respected.

It is about dignity.

This October, NCPD is asking South Africans to help us make a difference through the 15th Annual Nappy Run Drive.

๐Ÿ’™ Donate what you can.
๐Ÿ’™ Share the message.
๐Ÿ’™ Help us restore dignity.

Your Nappy Rands can become someoneโ€™s everyday dignity.

๐Ÿ‘‚ Tax benefits and hearing loss: Have you considered the connection?

Fanie Dreams explores the relationship between hearing loss, functional limitations and the criteria used when considering disability for tax purposes.

It raises an important point: hearing loss is not experienced only in decibels. Factors such as background noise, group conversations, communication environments and access to assistive technology can all affect how a person functions and participates in everyday life.

A thought-provoking read for anyone interested in hearing loss, disability and tax benefits.
