Ububele's training in mental health focuses on preventative strategies for children under the age of seven, their parents, families and other caregivers. The Ububele model links Western and African psychological knowledge and practice. Ububele seeks to address the emotional trauma of South Africa's past, the ongoing mental and physical effects of poverty and the daily challenges faced by those who

are socially marginalised, through community-based mental health care. Our motto is "Training through service, service through training." Ububele’s vision for South Africa is that of a nurturing society with secure, well-cared for children, who grow up to be emotionally healthy adults, competent parents and good citizens. Our objectives:
Develop models of community-based psychosocial care and support
Develop, run and disseminate training courses focused on preventative mental health strategies
Conduct research focused on the mental health needs of children under the age of seven, their parents and other caregivers
Advocate for the mental health care rights of children under 7
Provide psychotherapy services to Alexandra.

Our volunteers recently completed their first Psycho-Educational Workshop at Gresswold Senior School. In just six sessions, learners explored peer pressure and substance abuse, bullying, depression and anxiety, plus practical skills to help them navigate these challenges.
The sessions were highly engaging, with discussions and role plays that encouraged participation, strengthened understanding and deepened learning.
We are proud to support young people with knowledge and tools that promote mental well-being and resilience

In commemoration of Youth Day, our preschool teachers came dressed in their school uniforms.

It’s a simple way to start conversations with young children about South Africa’s history and the role young people played in shaping it. When children see their teachers reflect on the past, it helps them understand that history is made by real people, and that their own voices matter too.

Thabang Zitha Mabaso holds Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications in Early Childhood Development, and he is currently enrolled at SANTS Private Higher Education Institution, where he is studying towards a Diploma in Grade R Teaching. He joined Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust as a teacher in January, and is excited to be part of such a supportive and inspiring environment. Working with children is something he's deeply passionate about. He enjoys being part of their developmental journey, where he can nurture, support, and facilitate their growth while they acquire new knowledge and skills.

Being a male teacher in Early Childhood Development is meaningful to him, as he believes it is important for children to experience diverse role models who care for and guide them in their learning journey. At Ububele, he looks forward to getting to know each child, understanding their personalities, and supporting them as they grow and prepare for their transition to Grade 1 and primary school. Thabang is proud to be part of the Ububele community and grateful for the warm welcome and support from the staff. He hopes to contribute love, laughter, and meaningful learning experiences that support children’s development and readiness for the next stage of their education.

For Child Protection Week and International Children’s Day, our preschoolers learned about safety, respect and their rights in ways they understand.
Every child deserves to be safe, heard, respected and protected.
When kids know their rights, they grow with confidence.

Pyjama and movie day was a big hit at the preschool today!
From cozy pyjamas and popcorn to laughter and excitement, our little ones had the best time enjoying their very own cinema experience.
Some of our preschoolers were appointed as cashiers to assist with ticket payments, checking tickets, selling popcorn, and helping everyone find their seats.

Marlon Maswanganyi completed her undergraduate and Honours degrees in Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand. She's currently in the process of applying for the Master of Arts in Community-Based Counselling Psychology (MACC). Her interests lie in community-based mental health care, trauma-informed practice, and supporting individuals and families facing psychosocial challenges within under-resourced communities. Marlon is passionate about mental health and deeply value empathy, active listening, and creating safe, supportive spaces for individuals to share their experiences

She has been involved in several mentorship and volunteer initiatives. For two years, she served as a mentor for first-year university students through StudyTrust, where she provided academic and emotional support to students adjusting to university life. Marlon also volunteered at GRP, the wits graduate recruitment programme and had the opportunity to shadow a psychologist during a psychological assessment, where she assisted by interpreting due to her multilingual background. She's also involved in community work at church. These experiences strengthened her passion for accessible and culturally responsive mental health care.

Ububele’s focus on community-oriented, and relationship-based work strongly aligns with the kind of psychology she hopes to practice. As a clinical volunteer, she hopes to contribute compassion, dedication, and willingness to learn, while supporting the meaningful work Ububele does within the Alexandra community.
