Targeted assassinations of whistleblowers form part of a wider pattern of execution-style hits on brave people who speak out. The South African Government has an obligation to create a safe and enabling environment for all working to expose wrongdoing in the country. Yet, impunity for these killings continues, creating the environment for targeted killings and corruption to continue.

๐Ÿ“ฃ A reminder this : accountability depends on those willing to speak up. Whistleblowers must be protected.

Reports of multiple killings, including the alleged targeting of ward councillors, over this past voter registration weekend are deeply concerning. South African Police Service must urgently and thoroughly investigate these killings, establish the motives and ensure those responsible are brought to book.

South African Government South African Police Service must ensure the right to life is protected and civic space is safeguarded in the lead up to elections, and always. All political parties contesting the 2026 local government elections must ensure that they foster political tolerance to contribute towards preventing violence.

The safety and security of everyone, no matter who they are, must be respected before, during and after elections.

Fifty years after the Soweto Uprising of 1976, South Africaโ€™s young people continue to bear the brunt of unfinished justice. Many young people have lost faith in the governing system due to corruption, poor governance, lack of accountability and opportunity to create a better life. They do not feel heard or supported. Instead, they feel a burden to hold up, and participate in, a broken system.

The spirit of 1976 demands more than commemoration. It demands urgent, transformative action on human rights.

Video after video shows Israeli settlers violently harassing and violently attacking Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, seizing their livestock, bulldozing their schools, setting fire to their property and even killing Palestinians as part of a brutal campaign to forcibly displace Palestinians and expand control over the landโ€“ with full political and financial backing from the highest authorities of the Israeli state.

This is what a policy of state-led ethnic cleansing looks like.

Read our full report that documents how Israel is ethnically cleansing Palestinian Bedouin and herding communities in Area C of the occupied West Bank in a bid to expand settlements, entrench apartheid and accelerate annexation: https://amnesty.org.za/research/erasing-anything-palestinian-israels-ethnic-cleansing-of-west-bank-bedouin-and-herding-communities/
