CSVR, as part of the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa (ITJA) consortium, is proud to be participating in the AU-EU Seminar on Transitional Justice.

Transitional Justice in a Shifting Geopolitical Context: State of Play, Power Shifts and an Evolving Accountability Landscape

As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, the work of transitional justice becomes both more urgent and more complex. This seminar brings together key stakeholders from across the African Union and European Union to examine how accountability mechanisms are adapting — and must continue to adapt — in the face of changing power dynamics.

CSVR remains committed to advancing justice, healing, and accountability across Africa, and we are honoured to contribute to these critical conversations alongside our ITJA consortium partners.

From Policy to Practice: Transformative Transitional Justice in Africa

The AU Transitional Justice Policy represents a landmark commitment and explicitly recognising the gendered dimensions of conflict and the intergenerational transmission of harm. But a persistent gap remains between policy ambition and reality. Women are still framed as victims rather than leaders. Youth are consulted rather than centred. And the structural inequalities that enable violence too often go untouched.

Today’s event co-organised by CSVR, Impunity Watch, the African Women for Transitional Justice Platform (AW4TJ), and the African Youth for Transitional Justice Platform (AY4TJ) — in collaboration with the African Union DPAPS TJ Unit — bringing together practitioners, advocates, and policymakers to ask the harder question: what does transformation actually look like?

Today’s conversation focuses on;

✅ Examining what genuinely transformative justice looks like in practice
✅ Showcasing women and youth practitioners leading TJ processes across the continent
✅ Sharing lessons from Mali, South Sudan, Burundi, and the DRC — and draw connections with European TJ contexts

Supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union via the Global Initiative Against Impunity, and the Berghof Foundation’s Global Learning Hub for Transitional Justice and Reconciliation.

Accountability isn’t just a policy commitment. It’s a practice and it starts with shifting power away from impunity. 💪🏾🌍

World Environment Day is a reminder that climate action must also be grounded in justice and equity. As environmental impacts continue to disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, there is a growing need to integrate justice-centred approaches into climate responses.

Our latest article, Building Climate Justice through Transitional Justice: A New Path for Malawi’s Resilience, explores how we can address environmental harm while advancing fairness, accountability, and inclusive recovery.
